John Mcgeoch was unbelievably underrated & his work with Magazine , Siouxsie & PIL will continue to impress for years.

Every part of his playing was unique, chords, scales, rhythms..effects, lead breaks, use of feedback. And all with effortless fluidity. Exceedingly rare...freak of nature levels going on with John.

Everyone was at the peak of their powers with John!

It’s a really good book and very respectful to John and his legacy. Thank you Rory

One of Britain's best lead guitarist  s in history.

The Light Pours Out Of Me is a really absorbing and well written book about a remarkable and under-rated artist. Rory comes across really well in this interview. I hope that the money gets raised to make a documentary about John McGeoch. I've loved The Banshees since first hearing Hong Kong Garden in the summer of 1978, and John was the band's best and most innovative guitarist. He and the band achieved so much in those 2 short years (80-82). Great interview again, John. Thank you. Best. Mark.

Thx all for this.😊

I reckon a similary (slightly) overlooked guitarist that understood the song... was Mick Ronson. Love Mcgeoch. Genius.

i think Mcgeoch was a musician , more than he was a guitarist .
Very few guitarists of that ( or any other ) era could imply a subtext in the way they played , like he often would . He developed the occasional “cool” riff , but the lion’s share of his work utilized space and contextual nuance .  quite a unique maker .

He was an amazing player. And he acted like a big brother, showing the way to other musicians who came a bit later. I don't think Robert Smith's playing would've been quite the same without his example.

Rory Sullivan-Burke is the name of the author. His name should be in the video title.

Great discussion of the great John McGeoch. I saw John with PIL four times from 1988-1990 in the LA area. The one track the stands above all was the song “Worry” from the “9” LP. John used a flange effect, creating a whirlwind of sound in Universal Amphitheater. Indescribable. Thanks for the show.

McGeoch one of the reasons I picked up a guitar. I saw John playing for PIL in London and wading into the crowd to sort someone out after a pint was thrown at the band

Johns guitar playing and vision is pure genius for me its John and James Honeyman Scott that really stand out

met john at a pil gig 1986 glasgow

Anothe r great Interview John, thanks    John was a unique talent.  I went to a book Q +A evening in Liverpool when John's book was released   Dave Formula was in the panel as well as the author and Malcolm Garrett there to

I loved reading every single page of that book - It took me back to the time, my youth and I was immediately emotionally attached.
On top of that, the Magazine song with the same title stuck in my head for days. 😅

I grew up listening to Magazine and Banshees from their inception ... while a huge McGeoch fan it must be stated that McGeoch inherited the gear and a lot of technique from original Banshees guitarist John McKay! McKay used the MXR Flanger and the Roland JC120 Amp with the Marshalls. You later see McGeoch using the exact same backline and Flanger that McKay originally used. When Robert Smith stepped in he is also still seen playing the same Jobn McKay amps and effects. Steve Lliliywhite called John Mackay THE INNOVATOR.  McKAY was the one that started the full-on flanger sound in the post punk guitar period. McGeoch also found it near impossible to emulate McKay's guitar parts due to the huge stretch of his long fingers. When talking about the greatness of McGeoch ... a great debt of influence is to be paid to the even greater and more obscure John McKay.

Great interview!
Ill be getting the book soon mate, (had no idea!).
John played for the song, he cd weave melodies or play one note.. brilliant musician.

Magazine and SATB was fantastic. I didn;t recognize his playing anymore with that what was left of PIL. Couldn't listen to it anymore.. Fortunately both band and player had a great history to got into more.
