Bette Davis and Joan Crawford came up in the era when women rarely got power, and when they did, they were expected to run a tight ship with zero mistakes and to come in under budget. We didn't have time for take after take or extra rehearsal. You hit your mark, did your job, and were ready for the next scene. Lucille Ball was carrying an industry on her shoulders and had to answer to the network bosses, shareholders, investors, etc. Time is money; flubs cost money; money loss needed to be explained.
