Another way which I use is to set four jaw chuck jaw no. 1 horizontally and toward you then very lightly touch a turning tool against the side of the part. Note the reading on the cross slide vernier. Move the tool back and away using the saddle and turn the chuck 180 degrees. Bring the saddle and tool back and again lightly touch the part. Note the second reading. Halfway between the two readings is the centre, on that axis. Adjust and tighten jaws 1 and 3 until the tool lightly touching the part reads that halfway number, on both sides of the part. Repeat for jaws 2 and 4 and the centre of the part now lies on the Lathe axis.
That process also avoids any inaccuracies placing the centre pop. Can use it on both square and round parts, but not assymetric ones unless you can account for the assymetry.
