In this video I look at an original specimen of penmanship by J. J. Bailey that was published in the Business Educator in June of 1925. I look at both documents and analyze the strategies Bailey used to produce his best penmanship for reproduction.

Just started getting into Spencarian script. I'm fortunate to be one of the last generations of kids to learn cursive in elementary school, mid 2000s. No longer required in the US, but now that I have a classroom of my own, I'm going to be implementing American cursive practice for our students :)

There's note on the bottom "6 in rush". So I think it's the length of the line.

Fascinating. I would not have identified the wite-out under certain letters. Goes to show that precise and consistent strokes are hard even for seasoned pros. Thanks for doing this!

Sorry to be a downer. This is indeed beautiful and how I would like to write like this - get better I should say- (one of the ways), but it is discouraging since any type of cursive has not been taught to children of all ages in a couple of generations. Most of their parents can't read it (or Copperplate, or Spencerian, etc...) so other than for personal reasons, it is frustrating that I am taking the time to learn all these scripts when my church asks me to write out various certificates for them but just use my normal italic handwriting (mostly based on Getty-Dubay cursive-italic) because the children and especially their parents can only read block or typed lettering :-( I keep trying to write fancier but am always told to just use my own handwriting. Aargh! No Copperplate, Spencerian (no shading for sure!), or even a broad-edge nib for the most part.

Very well analyzed! I have seen the examples of when a penman taped over original work to make the reproduction seamless. How did they reproduce a copy ‘back then’ without a photocopy machine? ( Not familiar with the historic reproduction process) or send link to info and I can look it up:) ThanksDave!!!
