I just did this with a friend but we started with a bike ride from around Bad Water basin to Whitney portal (150 miles, 15K+ feet) so that we could go from the lowest point in the 48 states to the highest point in a single activity. It was absolutely brutal but such and incredible adventure. The whole climb up Whitney is just incredible, especially with the fall colors.

It was definitely a great experience for me.  Day hiked it 8/4/25.  Received a message from my mom, when i got back to the car, that my grandfather passed that day during the moment i was capturing the sunrise. Absolute gorgeous sunrise it was!  I'll forever remember

Hiked it in one day on January 3rd 1999. It was a long but great day. I've done harder hikes but it was one day to remember.

I soloed Whitney on August 19th some years ago for my 40th birthday celebration. Went up the Mountaineers Route (way shorter but MUCH more dangerous and easier to get lost on) and I came down the Regular Route (we climbers call that The Super Highway route 😂because of how easy it is and ALL THE PEOPLE). Doesn't matter how you get up there--it's one of the most stunning peaks in the lower 48 and you did an excellent job showing the scenery. Door-2-door it took me from 4am to 6pm--14 hours moving at a pretty quick pace from Whitney Portal. The weekend before my solo summit I'd attempted Whitney with a male friend (I'm female) from my climbing gym. The guy said he'd "climbed it 3 times", yet the dufus got us so lost and was so off in his recommended preparations, we ended up just below the peak on the East Face (with no gear!) at 4pm. Wellllll, we had to quickly down-climb the Mountaineers Route and got caught in the dark; luckily we met 3 marines who were camping around Iceberg Lake. So I got to sleep on the cold hard ground in a tent between two farting strangers (and was counting my blessings the whole night!) while Mr. Dufus slept behind a pile of rocks with ropes for blankets. I was a novice climber at the time and thought this guy with 26 years of experience under his belt would ensure my safety. WRONG. Which is why I did my own research and soloed Whitney the following weekend with no mishaps. Your video reminded me that even on easy terrain, you can still die. Those snowfields weren't near as extensive when I came down the mountain...luckily! Thanks for another great walk up Memory Lane.

Great vid and I love the historical intro.  I climbed it in 1996 via the east buttress, 5.8, 8 pitches, we had planned on doing the 5.4 East Ledges route but there were literally 7 parties of 2 at the base. So after waiting for like an hour, we went up the east butt, it snowed 3” during the last 3 pitches, we ended up sleeping in the hut on top, then like every hour til 4am, the 7 parties clambered in, eventually 16 of us all crammed in to that little hut!😂

I did this on June 28!! I started around 5:15 at Whitney Portal and got back to my car around 9:45. It was a beautiful day. Bring diamox if you have it! The altitude change will wipe you out a little before you summit 😝

I started exactly the same time you did, with a full moon to guide the way. Fantastic.  Oh-------sunscreen?  Absolutely.

I've done that hike and finished it with a trans-Sierra through the Kings Kern Divide and out to the Central Valley via Cedar Grove in two days. Spent the night on the summit of Mt Whitney too. Great adventure! Lots of hitch-hiking to and from the Bay Area.

You all overpacked.   Packs should be 1/2 that size.

I'm certain there are more difficult hikes...Whitney is only long, and the switchbacks come near the end.    Longs Peak, CO , also a 14'er, is a shorter hike, but it has one gnarly ascent up a long, steep, and rocky chute that is all scrambling - no trail.   I've read several reports of other Colorado mountains that are more difficult than Whitney.   The Whitney Mountaineer's Route to the north of the main trail is shorter but much more difficult.   If nothing else, I would call that the most difficult hike.
