I got good at pool in China (8-ball American). I spent 18 months in Shanghai (a month at a time, back to the UK for a few days, back to China again). There is an ex-pat pub called the Red Lion in Pudong, and there was really not a lot else to do in the evenings but to drink too much and play pool. It can do wonders for your game, especially since you play for the table.
