There is a thing women do in a fitting room that I noticed in about my 15th year and then could not stop noticing.

She is looking at a dress. The dress is fine. And while she is looking at it her hand comes up, and one finger presses the side of her own mouth, just there, and pushes it upward about a quarter of an inch. Then she lets it go and watches it fall back. And then she says she is not sure about the dress.

It was never the dress.

I must have watched a thousand women do that, and not one of them ever said out loud what they were doing.

The hands-on half of this video is NOT mine. It belongs to Jean Pargeter, who had the beauty room above the chemist on my street, gave facials for the better part of 40 years, and did my face once a month from the time I was 52. What is mine is the second half: what the eye actually sees when it looks at your face.

FIRST, THE THING JEAN TOLD ME THAT CHANGED HOW I LOOK AT MY OWN FACE: that line is not a wrinkle. You were born with it. Every baby has one. It is the join where the soft part of your cheek sits down onto the fixed line underneath, which is why it is properly called a smile line. It did not arrive because your skin creased. It deepened because the cheek pad came down onto it, and because the tissue above it holds fluid that no longer drains as briskly. That matters enormously: a crease in skin cannot be moved, but weight and fluid sitting above a fixed line genuinely can.

JEAN'S 5 MINUTES:
• The tension test at the wings of the nose
• Release the TOP of the fold, which is the anchor almost everyone ignores while massaging the middle
• Move the fluid out from the nose, under the cheekbone, to the ears
• FLUSH IT DOWN THE NECK — the step everybody skips, and without it the whole thing is pointless
• The small muscle below the mouth corner whose only job is to pull it down
• The chin muscle that presses up on your lower lip
• The sheet of neck muscle that drags the whole lower face down (do this one if you do nothing else)
• The cheek support lift to finish

Plus how often, Jean's two cautions, and the thing about your back teeth that is worth more than the whole routine.

AND THE HALF THAT IS MINE — because you will not make that line disappear, but you can change whether it is the first thing anybody sees:
• WHERE YOUR LIPSTICK STOPS (the one I promised a long time ago and have been slow to deliver): why colour travels, the liner rule, and the blot
• Where to put your blush, and the two-finger test for finding the right place on your own face
• Shine versus matte, and why a shine in a crease deepens it
• Your collar, your glasses, and the arms of your frames
• And light, which does more in one second than five minutes of anything else

THE HONEST PART: the video that sent me down this road has the word GUARANTEED in its title, and I would never use it. The puffiness genuinely shifts and you will see it the same morning. The tension genuinely lets go. But the line itself is the architecture of your own face, and anybody promising to erase it is selling you something.

AND ONE THING THAT MATTERS MORE THAN ANY OF THIS: if one side of your face droops suddenly, or there is new weakness or numbness on one side only, or your smile has gone uneven quickly rather than over years, stop and get medical help immediately. That is not a cosmetic matter. I would rather say it and have it be nothing.

Tell me in the comments whether you have ever caught yourself doing that thing with your finger in a mirror. I know the answer and I would like you to say it out loud. I read every single one.
