The four King Penguins are always a good place to start a tour of Dundee

Broughty ferry is a part of Dundee just letting you know. It’s a beautiful place but definitely in Dundee even though some people think it’s not.  Great upload.

Been a while since I have been to Broughty Ferry, so thank you for taking me down memory lane. I think another trip is in order soon.

Quality of life is fabulous in Dundee and surrounding area.

The towers are a jackup oilrig in dock for maintenance

amazing the world is dotted in hidden gems, all you have to do is open up your eyes

Jute and jam back in the day and Broughty Ferry is a true gem.

I was born in B/Ferry and still live there today, it is part of Dundee :)

I visit Broughty Ferry quite often, usually for upto a week at a time, and enjoy the shore walks a lot, either towards Dundee or to Monifieth, the shore path improvements over the last several years have made it a very pleasant  way to enjoy the fresh air and scenery. On my last visit a couple of weeks ago I had lunch one day at the Royal Arch, sitting at one of the outside tables as it was a nice sunny day - in fact I also had the homemade steak pie, to go with my large glass of Merlot. The Royal Arch is close to where my partner has a garden flat, I live most of the time in Nairn so it's either a train or car trip when travelling between the two. We did visit Broughty Castle together a few years ago, catching it on one of its open days, worth a visit if you happen to have an hour or so to spare.

Another nice little Dundee walk is to go up Dundee Law and you can walk along to the Botanical Gardens via the Mill Observatory mainly in parklands.

Small bit of Dundee info that not everyone knows, the Penguins next to the Discovery have thier Beaks pointing down as it was felt they would have been too dangerous if had them pointed outwards.

The Seaplane connection is that Dundee was the first home to seaplanes before World War One when a base was established near the Stannergate. despite its distance from the battlefields of mainland Europe, aircraft from the base saw action on numerous occasions - including a battle against Zeppelin airships. The base was disbanded in 1919 then reopened as HMS Condor II in 1940 until 1944.

Perhaps the most notable seaplane flight from Dundee was a world record attempt in 1938. Imperial Airways decided to challenge the Russian held record of 6,306 miles with a flight from Dundee to Cape Town in South Africa (6,370miles). The main challenge was how a plane could take off with the weight of the 2,000gallons of fuel needed to sustain its 50hour journey.

The answer was to mount a smaller seaplane (the Mercury) on top of a larger one (The Maia) for the take off, then release the smaller aircraft in mid air. Ultimately bad weather didn't allow them to break the distance record, but they did achieve the record for the longest non-stop seaplane flight.

A train trip with a pub lunch, my kind of day out! Broughty Ferry looks like a great town!

The aeroplane could be “The Mercury” which held the world record for the longest nonstop seaplane flight.

When I lived in Stonehaven we used to like to go to Broughty Ferry for a day out. As you say very much overlooked but a real gem of a place. We used the get the X7 Stagecoach bus to Dundee (which is a lovely ride in itself) then get one of the local buses, really easy to get to. A couple of times I’ve worked on the oil rigs that were in Dundee Port - involving local pubs in the evenings 😂

Broughty FERRY is a fantastic visit !! Been a few times , will go there again ! Good podcast ! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👏
