How do you turn a company that's been in the red for a long time? After much deliberation in management, a unique method called "balloon accounting" was born. By replacing the balance sheet with a piggy bank and the income statement with a balloon, the world of accounting and bookkeeping becomes much more familiar and intuitive.
It's amazing how even people who aren't good with numbers, or even elementary school students, can easily understand it.
This method isn't just useful for turning a company's operations around; it's also useful for reviewing your daily household finances, gaining confidence in career and career changes, and thinking about your future life plans.
You'll realize that learning accounting is actually directly connected to your lifestyle and future.
In this conversation, Megumi Matsumoto, the business owner who came up with Balloon Accounting, and Nikunokoji Nikuyo explain the background to the idea and how to actually use it!

Megumi Matsumoto
Graduating from Kitakyushu National College of Technology, she joined Lam Research Corporation, where she worked as an engineer for five years. She then studied abroad in Switzerland and earned an MBA. Upon returning to Japan, she joined the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, but left upon marriage. After marrying the second-generation president of Matsumoto Kosan Co., Ltd. (Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture), a 50-year-old manufacturer of automotive parts, she spent three years as a full-time housewife before becoming a director (general affairs and accounting manager).
Faced with a mountain of challenges, including poor performance, a labor shortage, personnel issues due to a lack of internal communication, and a black-boxed business environment, she found herself in a predicament as a director, tasked with accounting despite having no experience. While studying accounting herself, she sought a way to "generate profits and make both management and employees happy." Based on the belief that "the most important thing in an organization is the hearts of its people," she studied psychology, mnemonics, neuroscience, Buddhism, and other fields, and developed her own unique method, the "Balloon Accounting Method." This method successfully instilled an understanding of accounting perspectives in all employees and fostered a managerial mindset. Her sometimes strict, sometimes warm, maternal love brought together disparate employees, successfully implementing internal digital transformation centered on "purpose," "quantitative strategy," and "accounting thinking." By implementing an in-house app, she successfully reduced fixed costs by 40 million yen and created a workplace where women can thrive through improved work environments. She is also a key player in growing the company into one that actively promotes the appointment of women to managerial positions. She currently conducts workshops based on her book "Balloon Accounting Method" (Gentosha) to teach about money to employees of major companies and students.
