As a vegetarian, earlier I thought it was tough to meet protein requirement .I was trying to reduce my weight also and it did happen with home based protein rich meals. I just made small changes like adding soya chunks in wheat dough ,dal or pulses should be thick,curd ,adding kala chana in your breakfast like poha etc. I really think we just need to modify the way we eat rather than being dependent on whey protein.

My mother at age 64 is being prescribed protein supplements due to severe muscle loss. Had she consumed more protein and worked on building muscles in her younger days, she wouldn't have been suffering so much now. Protein is indeed important.

I am a South Indian guy trying to lose fat and build muscles. My diet was quite heavy on carbs since childhood. My mornings always were about Idli or Dosa and dinners mostly rice, some curry like sambar, dal, avial, a bhaaji, eggs on most days and chicken or fish twice a week max. I have been on a "adequate" protein diet over the last 4 weeks and the change is magical. Reducing the carb content like rice and increased consumption of eggs, chicken, dairy products etc. I have been also working out during the same period. For some reason, my weight hasn't shown any major difference, but I have lost 1 dress size, went down from XXL to XL in 4 weeks. My muscles are more defined and visible. My target is to reach size L and at the same time reduce weight. I think that should be achieved in next 8-10 weeks.

I narrated this story to tell you, Protein is indeed a very big requirement for us and our regular indian diet of dal, chawal, roti, sabji is quite short on that.

What annoys me so much is that its the older generations like our parents who fall for it, and we need to spend so much time trying to debunk and convince them that it is false. I wouldn't speak for all Indians, but I will say that many Indians I've come across in my life draw a very fuzzy line between philosophical logic and scientific logic. Case in point, the horsegram influencer. Scaremongering and snake oil salesmanship are also very prevalent. I blame the education system and the educators (like teachers and parents) who emphasize rote knowledge and only encourage knowledge that leads to getting a good job over actual scientific and general knowledge that begs critical thinking. Thanks for doing what you do.
