Lors de la prise de Kherson, le Stug III de Wittmann coula un bateau de transport russe et engagea un sous-marin ! Wittmann avait un culot énorme.
Sans tourelle, un Stug ne pouvait pas prendre facilement une visée et le conducteur devait faire pivoter l'engin, il fallait tirer juste sinon il était foutu.
Le Stug III fit toutes les campagnes de la Wehrmacht et de la Waffen SS, même après la sortie du Stug IV, toujours avec son canon court de 50 puis de 75mm. A la fin de la guerre apparut une évolution munie du terrible canon long de 88mm mais c'était toujours un canon d'assaut destiné à soutenir l'infanterie, doublé d'un tueur de chars aux mains d'un équipage compétent.
Le Stug n'était pas assez blindé pour combattre comme un char Panther ou Tigre et engager ces engins dans l'infernale bataille de Prokorovka fut un non-sens, bien peu survécurent.
