As part of the “mainstream” who has never climbed a mountain beyond VERY easy hikes in the Banff area, but has been obsessed with high mountain climbing for years…I think things like this and the documentaries that come out are all part of what makes the mainstream understand. It contextualizes these climbs and achievements in ways that make the subtle details and nuances understandable.

Love the cast great interview/guest. In 1992, I bailed on my friends to go start medical school from what was an early effort at filming simultaneous climbs of the White Room and Jetstream on HD. Not sure if the film ever got made. Always wondered how much that choice changed my life. 30 yrs later at the end of a medical career and lots of great climbing experiences along way, now with a family, and still love physical suffering on occasion.

After the fall of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 92 lightweight titanium oxygen bottles from Russia made guiding on high peaks possible for , let's say the masses. 8000 meter peaks had already been commonly climbed without all the palaver of fixed lines all the way to the summit. numerous high altitude sherpas and oxygen. When I summited Dhaulagiri back in the very early 80's there were two of us above base camp on the summit day. without oxygen. We had to climb the final day up and down as if it was an alpine peak. Current methods destroy the real adventure. Would you finish the Iron man on a motorbike and claim you finished.

Says "like" like every other word. Felt myself getting dumber. Like had to turn off

Hot take. If you jugged fixed line to get to the top of anything you can’t say you climbed it. You were at the top but that is not climbing in the spirit of what it is supposed to be about.
