"Stop filming this nonsense. Let's drive a truck across America!" Oleg and I rarely talk, but every time he surprises me with a completely unexpected idea.

I had a plan. Chicago, New York, Miami—and then home. I knew what I'd be filming, where I'd be filming, who I'd be filming. And I was already on my way to the airport when Oleg called.

"Where are you flying to?" he said in his cheerful, ringing voice, which seemed to have hardly changed since eighth grade, when we first met.
"I'll be in Chicago tomorrow," I muttered.
"Okay, I'll pick you up there in a week."
"Will you pick me up? Why?"
"I told you, we'll drive a truck across the States." Stop filming your nonsense, I'll show you the real America.

We talked and I hung up. My head swam like mirages: the gorges of Colorado, the wind-swept hills of Wyoming, the rustling pine-strewn Seattle, the surf-crashed Miami. All my plans were going to hell again. But that's how a good adventure usually begins. Let's go!
