Anybody that uses "woke" as a derogatory slur...I immediately disregard anything they say.

It's actually wild to think we had a hit song called Happy about 10 years before an equally big song called Anxiety.

I respect KG's commitment to wearing all green

The term woke had been bastardized from its original meaning and concept as a blanket term used for anything not even meant to be categorized as such like most black/ African American Idioms and concepts that have been "stolen" or "appropriated"

Its funny how Toure complained about McFarrin's song, "Don't Worry, Be Happy", bc everyone then and now didn't listen to the lyrics, only the punchline. He was speaking against Reganomics. Just like "Born in the USA" is not a positive ProUSA song either.

Lovely to see you two gentlemen on the last 'Culture United' episode 💜 x

Happy was a song on an animated movie soundtrack. Totally appropriate. It caught fire organically. Not because we were happier back then. It probably would today. People are starving for a reason to be happy. Same way they were when that song came out.
That video popped a hole in a tension bubble.
Showing average people from all walks of life dancing in the streets acting goofy caused a mental reset. It worked!
It was a sugar rush but it worked.
Then we went back to being burdened by natural life.

Historically, hip hop functioned as a vital linguistic response to socio-political conditions. The rise of 'mumble rap' represents a departure from this tradition; by prioritizing phonetic texture over articulation, it offers a sanitized aesthetic that allows a detached audience—such as 'finance bros'—to consume 'Black cool' without engaging with the genre’s inherent social critique.

I hate that house guests are allowed to speak on what's happening over here with so much confidence.

I love how when white people talk about "Hip Hop" dying, they don't want to refer to Eminem whom they consider the greatest rapper. When its bouyant, they flaunt Eminem like he's the greatest thing to happen to Hip Hop.

NO ONE GOT THE POINT OF THE ORIGINAL VIDEO?!?!

He used the evolution of hip Hop and how Kendrick had to kick down the door basically and make the change to what is going on in politics. We all are disgusted at how things are going but nothing is going to change until someone Kendrick style kicks the f**** door down and makes the change!

It was not a critique of hip Hop! He's holding up the genre of hip Hop as an example to those trying to make a change politically! We need a political atomic bomb like Kendrick had the rap atomic bomb of "Not Like Us"!!!

Also I respect the original video creator because another thing y'all didn't seem to get was that he was coming from his perspective as a WHITE BOY. I respect that he never tried to speak from our perspective or from inside rap culture. If you go back and look at everything he said in terms of the rise and fall of hip Hop it was from the perspective of the Billboard charts and what the white boys were listening to and what concerts the white boys were going to! Never once did he step out of his lane.

The thesis of the whole thing was that politics needs a Kendrick Lamar moment. We need an original authentic insightful idea to emerge to get us out of this Trump era nonsense. Drake = Trump. I mean they're both PDF files, right?? Kendrick got rid of Drake. Now we need someone, or some new idea, to get rid of Trump!

Hip Hop isn't dead. That low quality cousin of hip hop is on life support.

Yes! “This is America” is more applicable today.

We live in a moment where a masterpiece like 'This Is America' would be silenced before it ever had a chance to speak. It wouldn’t be a hit today—not for lack of quality, but for lack of permission to exist online.

Crazy to see a shiny, historically inaccurate, chatgpt script video blow up when Jeremy Hecht has been respectfully breaking down year by year how active hip hop was in his crown series.

36:14 that’s because these kids don’t actually know what our culture is culture have become one these internet words that gets over used

23:40 2011 there was a whole a “Drake Be Like” or “Drake The Type of Guy that…” meme era, Drake was getting clowned from then! 😂

One thing about Hip Hop and new sounds. It has been around almost 45 plus years. At some point the innovation takes a but longer or loops around.

The point you made about the difference between a vibe and a song is very interesting to me, and it hits pretty close.
I think something that gets critically missed when analysing this kind of thing in music is the absolute silent revolution in music production we are currently living through -- the past two decades have seen digital music production reach its absolute zenith in utility and the sheer potential of the tools that now exist, basically any sound that can be theorised can now be made, and crucially it's also far more accessible than it's ever been; the "SoundCloud rap" wave made liberal use of these production tools and made a lot of innovation in that space.
For better or for worse, it's easier than ever to make electronic music, the barrier to entry is incredibly low now, and a lot of new sounds came from people just experimenting with these very powerful and accessible tools of sound design, production, and song making.
I think tracing the advancements in DSP along with the modern advancements in music would correlate strongly.

Now though, we're seeing an unfortunate intrusion of "AI" into the process, making it easier than ever for anyone who doesn't need to even care about making music to "make" a song that already sounds like the most popular thing.
More than ever before, entire songs can be "produced" without being created at all, and the vast potential of DAW software is now being ignored since there's no longer a reason for most people who don't care about it and are just chasing money to engage with those tools' utility and potential...
Hell, AI sample extraction allows you to basically steal an entire song's stems for free, which just kills the joy of sampling to me and i also find widely unethical but it is possible now and people use it a lot.
I wonder if this will mark a plateau of electronic music production, and perhaps new creatives will return to the physical to escape the monotony of AI generated sounds.

There's still so much un-tapped potential in digital production, a whole lot of innovation still exists there, and perhaps it will continue to be the most powerful medium in music, but I wonder how long that will last...

That's just my two cents on this topic. great video!

The whole "hip is dead/dying" narrative rests on such a faulty premise (typically from people who aren't truly tapped in). If you're only judging and viewing hip hop through billboard and chart metrics or mainstream representation or judging it solely through the worst of the worst artists and songs, then sure, you can make the argument that the genre is dead or dying. The argument falls apart completely if you're viewing hip hop as a whole. No one who is truly tapped in could fix their lips in good faith to say the genre is dying or dead when artists like Samara Cyn, Marco Plus, Chris Patrick, Mick Jenkins, Billy Woods, Chance, Roc Marciano, Monaleo, SALIMATA, Rome Streetz, Mavi, MIKE, Clipse, Nas, Che Noir, Freddie Gibbs, Doechii, Westside Gunn and so many more are outside dropping 🔥. The bad part about narratives is that they don't require nuance or actual facts. Repeated enough times online, or in this case, a well put together YouTube video essay, then a lot of other ignorant people can and will buy into the narrative. It is my greatest wish that going into 2026, that we get white people like this dude, and honestly anyone who is ill informed to stop speaking so loudly and wrongly about our sh*t.
