Steal my Tesla as I sleep? Lets find out...

Just Get A Tesla

A viewer asked me if it's possible for someone to steal a Tesla as you sleep, with the phone key letting the car open. A challenge!

In this video I see just how far bluetooth reaches, both to open the door and summon the car. Lets just say that results are mixed...!

Welcome to Just Get A Tesla! Despite all of the new EV competitors I am going to show you why instead of looking at something else, you should Just Get A Tesla!

Maybe if there was another human, either holding the phone or standing by the door of the car. One of you walk towards the car as the other tests the door to see if it unlocks.

Having the phone on the ground may be affecting the Bluetooth microwave signal. Try putting the phone on a tripod and then repeat the distance test.I think that blue tooth receiver antenna is in the door mirror.

UWB is used to determine position and proximity. The car is clever enough to know the person attempting to get unauthorised access does not have the phone in the same location/close proximity to the car.

If you go into Service Mode in the Tesla you can see the signal strengths your phone key has to the multiple internal Bluetooth antennae.
The Tesla security system triangulates the position of the key based on the signal received on all the receivers and "calculates" where the phone is.
There are predefined areas where the key is "valid" for unlocking.

Your (Just Get A Tesla's) Tesla being a new Model Y and the iPhone 17 being used both support UWB which is the latest technology for precise device locating which also will be used in this specific scenario.

"Consistently inconsistent"... no wiser words have ever been spoken re: our Teslas 🤪

Instead of placing it on the ground on a metal tape measurer. Try setting it on something non-conductive about 1m off the ground.

The ground can shield the signal.

Keyless entry with my phone works well for me - unfortunately these days i’m more likely to forget my house keys as a result!

Definitely not convinced yet to spend £3200 on smart summon and auto parking!

Brilliant, love real 'live' tests 😂

Re summoning, I think your holding your tongue wrong.😊

I think it's not that simple, there is a more complex algorithm here. Mine locks pretty fast when I'm walking away from it. It also locks even if I am near the car but havent touched it in a while, 20-30 secs?) and all doors are closed. It also wont unlock for the passenger even when Im near (like behind the car), until I get closer to the driver's door (2-3 meters). It will also lock itself even with the passenger inside if I leave the vicinity of the car (pisses my wife off, haha). Highland with Android 15 phone, no UWB. All in all, seems rather secure...I'm not worried. Plus I use pin to drive, just in case..

My M3 use to struggle unlocking stood next to the car pulling on the handle 😅

summon was very entertaining!

Hello from North America. There are fail safes built into the app when you walk away say far enough to lock the vehicle, you must be right near the door handle to unlock the car to prevent someone from entering your car while walking up to it or say being in your house and should not matter what house is made of😊 Try unlocking your car in your driveway get in toss your phone on the ground, close the door and attempt to drive away 😮 I already know what will happen in north America 😂

Lots of variables here. Phone model, Rain/buildings causing interference, camera detecting people or objects (summon), not being away from the vehicle far enough and long enough. Just because it locked doesn't mean it can't still see your phone. We use P2D anyway but the wife left her phone in the house this morning and couldn't put the car on charge without grabbing her phone. Awesome feature.

Pin to drive. Doesnt matter if they steal the phone or not, even they do manage to drive off, Valet and speed limit mode set to 20mph will make it dead easy to retrieve.. Maybe with summon it goes "Do it yourself lazy bones" and you need to be further away?

Even if my phone is in my back pocket, I often have to do the Tesla Tango before it will open 🕺🏼

I took a job further than the last one. Got FSD to help while working 12 hour days at the beginning. Still like driving more, but it’s nice to have. Summon worked once on trip where I parked at the back of the lot and had the car meet us at the store exit. If it can get to the point of parking and picking up the driver at the door that would be cool. Although, I like walking, too.

I hate how quickly my Juniper locks when I get out

My sentry mode reel is filled with footage of my wife trying to open the driver’s door. Her phone is in her bag which is slung over her shoulder which is evidently too far away. I always keep my phone in my left pocket and never have an issue. The biggest issue I’ve come across is that it sometimes takes an awfully long time to lock when walking away. A canny crook looking out for parking Teslas would easily be able to jump in and swipe something valuable. I also use PIN to drive as an extra layer of security.
