You can put them in crates but not overnight or for hours during the day. They have to take the doors off crates so the dog can come and go whenever they want.
I had a crate for my lab. Never had a door on it. I couldn't keep the bugger out of it. It was his space. He was never punished in it, he was never banished to it, and for him I 'm sure it was his safe haven.
I've just got 2 labradors puppies and they absolutely love their crates. It's just like us having a house. It's their space to chill. Totally agree with you
My working cocker is a gem, when he was little he slept in a crate. Once he was about a year old I got him a basket and he was happy. He’s now nine years old. About six months ago he started coming upstairs during the night. I bought a stair gate but he broke it 😂. So I got his crate back out and put an old blanket over it. He now sleeps again all night in the crate even with the door open. He loves the security.
Thirty years ago we had a terrier pup in the kitchen who chewed through a live fridge cable All our present dogs see crates as bed because thats where they were born
We crate trained our Cocker and she loved it she is now 3, Crate has gone as we don't have much room in our 1 bed flat. Her place now is under the computer desk as its small and closed in. If we got the crate out again she would walk straight back into it for R&R .... She loves it.
People are not listening....dogs should not not be shut up in crates...at night or while you're at work all day.....a dog will sleep at night if its had the normal day it should have had....people are abusing dog crates.......we manged without them....
Hello from Germany, Here is the legal situation summarized briefly - how I understood it: • Strictly Prohibited: Confining a dog to a closed crate for hours at a time (e.g., overnight or while you are at work) is illegal under the German Animal Welfare Act (Tierschutzgesetz) and the Animal Welfare Dog Ordinance (Tierschutz-Hundeverordnung). • Space Requirements: The law mandates a minimum floor space of 6 to 10 square meters for a dog's enclosure. Standard crates are far too small. • Exceptions: A closed crate is only legally permitted for safe car transport or under strict veterinary orders (e.g., medical confinement after surgery). • Open Crates Are Okay: Using a crate as a cozy den is perfectly fine, provided the door remains open so the dog can leave whenever it wants.
Please Note, that this is not my opinion on how it should be, but my understanding of the current legal Situation.
My 5-year old GSP chooses to snooze in her crate even when the other option is the sofa 🤷♀️ With an open plan house, I do occasionally close the door if I have tradesmen in, as she always wants to help them. But basically, it’s her location of choice for sleeping - no coercion required.
Any dog I’ve ever had has loved their crate and now I’m on a cat I have his carrier out all the time because he loves sleeping in it. Animals like us living in houses like their own space and their own safety!!
Our two year old border loves her crate. She only sleeps in it at night now and I can’t see how she’ll ever not want to sleep in it. She knows our bedtime routine and as soon as she sees us getting ready for bed she runs into the crate, I close the crate door , place a blanket over the top and she sleeps happily in it till 7 in the morning. Not a peep from her all night. She doesn’t use it during the day anymore and can be safely left for the times we go out without her. I hope the use of a crate is ever banned in the UK otherwise she’d be very distressed.
