We need more "Poets analyzing rap music" in general. Listening to him break down the lyrics really illuminates just how much rap is poetry, like at one point he perfectly described/defined what "flow" is in rap and I dont even think he realized it.
the ratio of text to analysis and insight is crazy. his points about cultural differences, novelty and antiquity, linguistic structure, dialect etc were great
if you get together again i would definitely watch
8:09 "This conflict that we live as ex-colonialists, right? We have transferred it to the colonies while America lives it in its own territory." Who is this professor dropping almost as many bars as Kendrick?!
I am a Black American who was a child when rap was born. I also listened to Italian opera during childhood. It's been easy for me to listen to both musical art forms because of their attention to both instrumentation and the musicality of language.
It's delightful to see my two early interests come together here. This was a lovely conversation.
4:37 Kendrick also does this on Swimming Pools and arguably in an even cooler way. It's the line where he says "you get a pool full of liquor then you die...vin it"
I won't lie, as a Black American experiencing my country's attempted erasure, seeing our creativity appreciated across language and culture makes me feel... good. I am sure there is a better word but right now all I got is good.

Eat a banana before you eat spicy food (they’re good for gut health). Thank me later.
