The Deep Is A Frustrating Book | Critique & Review

Nick Cutter's "The Deep" was such a frustrating book to me that I insulted it, randomly, in a previous video. Why did I do this? What is wrong with it? Well, I re-read it to answer these questions, and I've returned with this essay on the book. Hopefully I'll enjoy The Troop better...

Books:
The Deep - Nick Cutter

Games:
Dead Space Remake (Main)
Dead Space 2 (Supplemental Clip)

Music:
Vibing Over Venus - Kevin Macleod
SCP-x2x - Kevin Macleod

I'm sorry...bitten by a millipede? A MILLIPEDE?? They don't bite! Even if they did, their mouth parts are too small to do any damage! I'm offended on the millipede's behalf, actually.

I hated how the ambrosia was so nebulous and the Gets just disappears from the plot as the story goes along

Millipedes can’t even bite…

This book shouldn't have had the Gets in it. like genuinely, if the evil abominations want to honeytrap humanity with the ambrosia, it could just cure any disease, no introducing and then abandoning a different interesting horror plot necessary

Not me getting an ad right before you said "what if I interrupted the story?" tangent 😂

on the mischaracterization note the thing that got me was the reveal that these dork ass alien things picked Luke because he was "so loving". but this is right after the reveal where he finds out Clayton was sexually abused by his mother and calls him a monster for killing her😭 like he is but like he lowkey calls him selfish for doing it and barely even feels sympathetic for his brother like huh

I feel like the deep would work as a movie. But compared to the troop, it was definitely weaker

I cannot believe that a book that started out describing a plague that deteriorates the mind ended up describing a scary toy box 😭my god this book was all over the place. I remember just wanting it to be over once I got halfway through it. And it was so long!! I really kind of stopped caring

The Troop was the first Nick Cutter book I read, and it really got me into the horror genre. Afterward I read The Deep and DNFed it. The build up was grueling for an ending that never seemed to reach a climax. Now knowing how it ends, i’m even more frustrated about it. The Troop is definitely worth the read though!

The gummy bear equivalent of the arthropod world being what haunts a VETERINARIAN was so hilarious to me. Centipedes are the scary looking venomous ones that bite and sting VERY badly.

I dunno I kind of liked that the "gets" didn't get explained or resolved. It adds to the doomed feeling of the world. Like even if he escaped the research station, all that's left to return to is a dying world full of husks of humans.

it's ironic that bad entertainment pieces teach us more about how to better our crafts then the good examples

Hey Arnold taught me how to spell onomatopoeia, can't recommend it enough

"The Gets" is a real stupid name for a forgetting-disease and it feels like it should have only been called that by younger characters who are trying to be light-hearted

Your issue with the breaking up of chapters with flashbacks is really interesting to me, because in my reading experience, it made The Deep a total page turner. Having a cliffhanger at the end of a lot of present day chapters really kept me hooked.

picked this book up about a year ago because a deep sea body horror sounded right up my alley. this shit had me laughing at how bad it is by the end of it. been searching for a long form review of this atrocity ever since, and now one of my fav youtubers drops one out of the blue. thank you!

hey dude, have not finished the video yet but i have to comment now or otherwise i'll forget (lol...) if you're interested in another horror book that also explores an amnesia plague of sorts, i HIGHLY recommend 'There Is No Antimemetics Division' by qntm. i'm rereading it now and having a ton of fun with it. it definitely isn't extreme horror, but its very intriguing and unique!
