You have the bottom spring installed incorrectly.  It should go through the hole as you show, but the curved part of the "tang" should rest on top of the handbrake bar.  It serves an anti-rattle function, and with the curved part resting on top, the handbrake bar can move back and forth.  Installed the way you show, the pointy end digs in to the bottom of the bar, which hinders the movement of the bar.  This makes the handbrake difficult to adjust, and hinders proper operation.

Nice work again, thanks for the tip on the gloves,got some off the tinder web quite reasonable, I always thought you should torque the nuts and not the bolts? Maybe that’s why they felt tighter than you thought they should? Love listening to your brain work things out, you keep motivating me and when life stops getting in the way I’ll get on with 1969 roadster, thanks Barry.

Good job ! .Just a question ;  what is the preconised tork to fix the four bolts near the black brake plate , after renewing the oil seal ?
