Guam has been my favorite island ever since my first visit during my university days. But now, the Tumon area has changed considerably.

The DFS Galleria, a symbol of the town, is closed, Tumon Sands Plaza is almost completely shuttered, and the aquarium is also closed… Prices are 2-3 times higher than in Japan, the yen is weak, and the number of Japanese and Korean tourists has decreased. The streets at night are darker than before, and I felt a little lonely.

I spoke to pilot Okada, a Guam resident, to get his perspective on why so few people are coming. On the other hand, the beauty of the beaches remains the same. Don Quijote and local shops are still bustling, and the nostalgic Osaka Mart is still open.

Just 3.5 hours from Japan, with a time difference of only 1 hour, I witnessed the reality of "Guam in the Reiwa Era." Please share your thoughts in the comments section on how Guam can become vibrant again.
