It’s amazing these are still here.

All the heel marks from all the years. Love it.

BTW! Not a fire risk.
No smoking allowed.
The wood is a facade.
There's metal underneath.

See below;
The world's largest department store installed its oak and ash wood escalators between 1920 and 1930. Over the years, they've been renovated for safety standards and mechanical updates. But while some have been fully modernized, the treads on most remain wooden.

Well maintained!  I rode these with my kids going to see Santa in the 90s. 👍🤎

We had 3 wooden escalators in downtown Akron in O'Neil's back in the day.

Got to ride these yesterday.  They are smooth. No vibration, no jerking.  Just smooth.

So classy 😍❤

I ask everyone to come to Macys Herald Square, all escalators are getting cleaned for our lovely customers!!!

That’s really cool! There’s an old macys near where I live in Pasadena CA with really really awesome mid century furniture pieces, art, and chandeliers.

Those are cool...

I never seen the escalator like that before..

to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and will really really LOVE macys

When old otis escalator

like the escalators of the Soviet metro in Moscow. This is how they looked before the 1980 Olympics Game.

As a child, I lived in department stores. Spent a lot of times in this Macy's and I remember these escalators very well.

I’m not gonna lie, wooden escalators are pretty rare to find, because the only escalators I have ever ridden are metal.

That escalator brings back a lot of memories of me and my Mother - lots of GOOD ones.

Nice

is it just me or is the sound generated by this wooden escalator, calming...?

Thanks, I recall in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1950s, when I was growing up, our downtown department stores had the wooden ones. They kept them around through the 1970s,...a few floors, were still serviced by them, until the early 2000s.
