Is Chiang Mai Thailand’s best value getaway? Join us as we travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, explore its Old City and night markets, try local street food, and share the prices we paid for an affordable stay in northern Thailand.

Our journey starts with a little rain, a rental car, and some exploring before hotel check-in. We visit the beautiful First Miracle Flower Castle and discover colourful flower gardens surrounded by misty mountain scenery—a beautiful welcome to Chiang Mai, even with the rain coming and going!

Back in the city, we check into a budget hotel opposite one of the Old City gates before heading out for local food, busy markets and a walk through Chiang Mai after dark. From the Saturday Walking Street to a special birthday dinner, there’s plenty of life in the city—and plenty to enjoy without spending a fortune.

We finish with breakfast beside the Old City and a look back at our experience. Affordable hotels, delicious food and a lively atmosphere made this a great start to our Chiang Mai trip, despite the changeable weather.

Next, we’re heading deeper into northern Thailand to explore famous temples, mountain roads and a homestay among the rice terraces of Ban Pa Pong Piang. A completely different side of Chiang Mai is coming next!
