"That forks the hidden family and his own" is the most diabolical shit I've read in a while

the matchup was uneven from the beginning, LaPadite was an amateur while Landa was clearly many years into being a GM, this was inevitable.

This is like Magnus Carlsen trolling a 100 elo player

The 800 rating LaPadite had no answer for the 3200 rating GM Landa and his Beast Opening floorboard variation.

missed oportunity to start the scene even earlier, when they switch from french to english, which later becomes a hidden attack as it leaves the jews out of the loop about the conversation

Make a Steamed Hams one, I'm begging you

This scene always kills me.

Landa has a large advantage at the start, and the slow, seemingly inevitable dip towards a checkmate feels truly terrible.

Christoph Waltz and Denis Ménochet do an incredible job making it feel inevitable and heartbreaking.

The floorboard variation has been completely refuted at grandmaster level, LaPadite should have known this

You should do that one scene in better call saul where Jimmy talks tuco out of skinning the 2 skaters that would be rlly cool

this match genuinely is a GM vs a guy who recently learn to play chess

I actually think comparing squirrels and rats is a mistake from Landa.
If Lapadite mentions their habitats and that rats are commonly found in dirty disease ridden spaces whilst squirrels tend to make their homes in trees, I think it explains his animosity towards the rat whilst shutting down Landa’s point in the process.

Of course he doesn’t which makes his response ‘I suppose’ a massive blunder as it gives Landa full control of the situation and he’s allowed to continue with his point completely unopposed.

Fantastic content though 🙌🏼

Such a fascinating strategy. The match was effectively over and Landa was winning fairly early. So early that he convinced his opponent to reveal their entire strategy to him

You should do Death Note next, with Light trying to get Naomi's name

The point made over how Landa wants to force the farmer into revealing the hiding places is interesting. He's already got what he's needed at this point and won the game. He and/or his officers could storm the basement and be done with it in minutes. But Landa still feels the need to force his opponent to not only concede but also become complicit in revealing where the Jews are that he's hiding.

I wonder how much of this "forced complicity" was part of Tarantino's plan for the narrative, and how much of it was allegory for a more complicated issue we can all understand while looking back at the lives of occupied frenchmen (and others) during WWII.

Hidden floorboard variation, met with the accepted surrender gambit works best at lower rating, however Landa shows his incredible prep work using modern engines at 3500 elo.

However the greatest move Landa made though was switching the convorsation to English as not to give any warning or context clues to the only, French speaking Jews .

Watching this scene for me is like watching a Tal game, it's brilliant

When Landa begins to smoke his pipe it should be a great move, that's one of the most important details of the interaction. Landa is telling he may be the same but still superior and a true detective.

Unskippable title vs unstoppable scroll

There were no brilliant moves in this game, and yet a brilliant game was played.
