The take years growing up to be good at marching bass, but only 1 week to practice a routine.
They have to be ready for every Saturday because a new routine is done.

It is way more impressive when you know that, literally 6 days to practice.

My son was in the OSU Marching Band, he was a susaphone player and dotted the 'i' in 2024 in "Script Ohio". It was awesome to watch and see how they learn. They perform a new show for every home game. This means they have one or two weeks to learn the music and the show. If they have 2 weeks before the next home game, they ususlly have a harder performance to learn. When the team moves on to bowl games at the end of the season, the band votes on which show from that season that they want to perform at each bowl game. It's soooo cool!

Known as the "Best Damn  Band in the Land!"

What I love is that they are watching college marching band but there are high school marching bands doing very impressive stuff too, besides most of those students if not all were high school marching band members.

These are full time students! With requirement to keep grades at a very high level. They have to audition every year both musically and the marching routines. Just because you were with the band last year doesn't mean you are going to be in next. They start in band camp in the summer and can go as long as January for the Bowl Games. It is truly grueling work. Those routines are done at "home" games so sometimes they only have a week to learn the new music and routines!!!! My hats off to every student that is band or orchestra!

Right now it’s a great part of summer u hear the high schools practicing band music is just amazing

My favorite OSU is Tribute to  Hollywood  Blockbusters.

And they do all of that, while playing instruments in perfect time.

The guy in the red and white uniform with the tall hat, twirling a mace baton is the Drum Major. He’s not a conductor (several conductors are on ladders on the sidelines). The Drum Major gives marching directions when the band is moving from the Stadium to another building, or when parade marching. During halftime shows, he displays his (or her) skills in twirling the mace baton.

I am a US Army veteran. Because I was in marching band for 6 years (Jr. High and Sr. High), learning to march in boot camp was a breeze! THANKS FOR POSTING, Tanks ❤

In the US, as a former marching band member myself, we spend years learning our instruments (usually having the option to start playing music in school around the 4th or 5th grade), but no the marching routines themselves are learned basically the week of the show.

You've got like 6 days before the next game to learn the entire show. (Edit: Maybe you'll get 2 weeks if your lucky and you've got an away game coming up at an opponents field.)

Older American here.   This just demonstrates how sports in America exist for more than just the athletes who play in the game.   So so many more people partiparticipate in the overall event & make a meaningful contribution to the total experience.

--- Funny how so many in the UK, Europe & other countries around the world preach about the importance of inclusivity but do little or nothing to include others in their sporting / athletic programs & events, like we do in America.

--- Just look at all the tangible & intangible benefits all these other participates gain from being part of & included in these types of activities.    Look at all the experiences & life lessons you & your children will never have experienced because you don't practice what you preach, inclusivity.   All because your sports programs primarily exist for the small handful of players good enough to excel in the sport.

--- You see inclusivity primarily as a race or gender construct.   In America, we see inclusivity as an adjunct participatory concept.   We ask ourselves how can we get more people involved?    We provide others, not just the elite athletes, an opportunity to contribute, participate & learn from being part of the total experience.

--- Think about how many people outside of the US have enthusiastically proclaimed, on YouTube & other platforms, that they would have loved to have had the opportunity to attend an American high school when growing up.

--- Did you ever take a moment to consider why?   What is it that American schools provide that theirs did not?    Then ask yourself why your schools don't provide these same opportunities?

--- How many, in the UK, Europe & other countries around the world, have stated "no one came to watch their university matches" & that they themselves would probably never go back to watch one themselves.   Why?   Maybe events & activities like you are watching have something you don't have in your culture.   Maybe this & other sport associated activities, that we have in America, add something to our culture that others are missing?

All 102,780 people in the “Shoe” (The Horseshoe) know that we’re not called The Best Damn Band In The Land for nothing. They do halftime shows like this for Every Home Game.

Our fans are the for the ENTIRE experience.

O-H… I-O 🙆🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️🙆🏻‍♀️

That guy is the drum major.  The one conducting the band is up on the stand at the 50 yard line.  How does someone create that?  There are people who make their living doing it.  They're called Drill Writers/Drill Designers.  A college marching band typically performs 3 to 6 different shows (programs) per regular football season. Band members learn a new field show every one to two weeks for home games. They repeat some fan favorites or use a single major show for special away games or exhibitions.  One of my sons was the drum major in high school and marched DCI.  That's Drum Corps International.  If you really want to be blown away, watch a DCI marching show. Age group is 16-21.

I was fortunate enough to have seen OSU Best Damn Band in the Land do the Script OHIO  in person 2 times many many years ago.  I still get chills remembering it.  It is great on TV, but the live experience is incredible.

TANKS, the leader is called the drum major, and he's basically an on field leader who also does his own show.  However, the real leader is holding a baton at the edge of the field--like an orchestra leader.
Are you sitting down?  After doing this show, they started the following Monday working on their next show, which would be done at the next home game, which was very likely the following weekend, but certainly no more than 2 weeks.  They spend more time on the football field than the football team does.  It's amazing!

My niece plays Sax  in the BGSU ( Bowling Green State University ) marching band which is the largest band in the nation  with regard to number of members. She told me they practice daily during the week for 2 hrs  each day and then 4 hrs on Friday and game day which is Saturday.  They practice new songs and formations every week. She loves being in band.  She’s been in band since 7th grade.  Her two younger siblings are also in band and their Mom and Grandparents, who are my in-laws, were also in band.  On top of being in band, my niece has a 4.0 GPA. I don’t know how she does it. She also takes a few honors classes and still finds the time for band practice and a bit of social time with her friends. I’m so proud of her.

That's my Buckeyes!

High School bands usually perform the same show all season. College bands often perform different routines for every game, that's weekly.
