Pastel painting, where colors are layered directly without the use of a brush.
While one might have expected soft flowers and landscapes, the exhibition featured rough lines, intense colors, and exquisite detail that captured even a single strand of a lion's fur.
This video introduces both the 40th Korea Pastel Painting Association Exhibition and the 36th Korea Pastel Painting Contest.
A total of 143 entries were submitted to the 36th Contest, and 71 were selected as finalists following a preliminary online screening.
In the second round of judging, which involved the actual works, the completeness, originality, modern sensibility, and the expressive power of pastel materials were comprehensively evaluated to select 16 works receiving Special Selection or higher, as well as the Grand Prize and 5 major award winners.
In this video, we first take a look at the contest works, including the Grand Prize winner Na Kwang-ho's *Grass Pile Utopia: Crape Myrtle*, as well as Kim Young-ok's *26-Mulmangol*, Ahn Hye-ri's *Journey Toward the Moon*, and Hwang Young-hye's *Slowly, Finally*. Next, we present the 40th exhibition of the Korea Pastel Painting Association, which has contributed to the development and expansion of Korean pastel painting since its founding in 1987.
We have captured a total of 24 works, including Lee Ki-bun’s *Garden Beyond Time II*, Kim Kyung-shin’s *Mother’s Day*, Song Young-myung’s *Memorial*, and Choi Mi-sun’s *A Bountiful Collection of Memories*, either with commentary or without explanation.
Although painted with the same pastels, each piece differed in color, texture, and the world they viewed. We invite you to discover the unexpected power hidden within these soft materials.
