Honestly ive always felt lightspeed rescue was my personal favorite power rangers series despite being sandwiched in between some of the greatest to ever do it
I know the show came out a year before 9/11, but with its emphasis on rescuing civilians in danger, I can't help thinking of this cast of Power Rangers as TRUE heroes. I really liked seeing Carter and Dana doing their thing years later as firefighter and paramedic. I wonder how many little kids they helped inspire.
Lightspeed was the true first Post-Zordon season and I loved it. Was one of the few seasons (along with Lost Galaxy) that I watched all the way through (cuz unlike other seasons, it didn't stop production and run a million re-runs).
I always assumed the demons' bodies were trapped, not their spirits, which was how Diabolico was able to make a "deal with the devil". As for what happened to Ryan during all those years, I think it's creepier not knowing. Also, I think the demons getting released was more or less prophesized to happen, and it was simply inevitable. I don't think Lightspeed Rescue knew where the temple was, and were more preoccupied making sure they were prepared for when the inevitable happened. Demons trick people and manipulate, and I think actively building a base or bringing people to the temple would have fulfilled the prophecy, eventually. It's a kids show, and I bought it.
One of the best aspects of Light speed rescue I loved was the morph sequence itself. The whole shape molded into the suit then the rangers shape for their visors definitely badass
Lightspeed Rescue is a classic, it has beautiful stories, more mature/adult rangers and it shows real humans with a duty to help civilians, with the rangers also being just regular people, not superheroes with powers. It's so refreshing.
And the villains are TERRIFYING. As a kid Diabólico, Olympus and Queen Banshera were a living nightmare on the screen for me, and now as an adult I see them and I still think they look absolutely shit your pants levels of scary.
Oh, and how could I forget, it has one of my first gay awakening moments with Ryan, the titanium ranger. Still have a huge crush on him😭
There are two things I love about Lightspeed Rescue in particular. One is the back-and-forth arms race between Lightspeed and the demons, as if they were logistically countering each other. Unlike most series of PR, where the rangers are constantly on the backfoot (RPM, In Space, latter Mighty Morphin) or are generally on top of the villains (most of the rest), in Lightspeed Rescue, Lightspeed and the demons are basically an even match for each other for the most part. They're at an impasse, and you can feel the desperation on both sides: Lightspeed to protect Mariner Bay, of course, but also the demons to actually defeat the Rangers before Bansheera arrives. It's why the Titanium Ranger introduction through Diabolico's defeat is such a great arc. Diabolico isn't even defeated with a new superweapon. The Lightspeed Solarzord was always on the table (cleverly concealing it from the audience the whole time), and Diabolico's efforts to undermine it (first by controlling Ryan, and later by trying to kill him) were an attempt to keep the Rangers' trump card offline. In fact, the way in which the Lightspeed Solarzord defeats Diabolico is such a perfect alignment of factors that you don't get the suspicion that the Lightspeed Solarzord could fold any demon it ever fought. Much is made of Diabolico's star power, and when it carves a hole in the Supertrain in one of the most visceral wounds a megazord has taken in Power Rangers up to this point, you see how big of a deal it really is. But the Lightspeed Solarzord is covered in solar panels, which after a fashion are designed to absorb the power of a star, and so can reasonably be expected to absorb that same star power, which is exactly what happens. This makes Diabolico's defeat a one-time feat that the Lightspeed Solarzord would never repeat. Diabolico threw everything at the Rangers, even himself, because he knew that, no matter what the Rangers could do to him, he knew that Bansheera would do worse. Meanwhile, the Rangers basically held out long enough for the villains to blink, relying on technology that works the way you would imagine it would applied in unique ways. Though the Rangers managed to best the most powerful demon in the entire show up to that point, tension was preserved for all future fights, as it was unlikely such a trick would ever work again. (And when Jinxer kept darkening the skies in future zord fights, the Rangers had to switch around their strategy to counter.)
The other thing I love about Lightspeed Rescue is the larger implication to Power Rangers as a contiguous story up to this point. I'm sure the notion "why teenagers, Zordon?" has occurred to people before. Lightspeed is the answer. Lightspeed is why the Rangers went from the Zeo crystal to building their own zords, naturally cars, in Turbo. The point of Zordon's advent wasn't just to stop Rita, Zedd, Master Vile, the Machine Empire, or even Dark Specter. The point was to bring Earth into the greater battle against evil, which would succeed all of those specific forces, good and evil alike. To show humanity the Morphing Grid. To let us tap into it for the power to fight. And then to teach us to use it on our own. Lightspeed Rescue, by heavy implication, is the first time humans of Earth tap into the power of the Morphing Grid completely on their own, using it as they see fit. Why teenagers? Because teenagers grow up. They take what they learned, and they apply it elsewhere in life in the manner they choose. This is why Lightspeed didn't need to choose teenagers again. The lesson was over. It was time to stand. If In Space was about Zordon's death, and Lost Galaxy was, in part, about Zordon's legacy, then Lightspeed Rescue is proof that Zordon was right to see the potential in us to begin with. Lightspeed is Earth's first chosen step in joining the likes of KO-35, Triphoria, Aquatar, possibly Miranoi, and Eltar itself in the ever-lasting alliance of Good.
