Wildlife photographers are like "there's a single shot mode?"

If we get 1 good image out of 100, we're achieving a pretty good ratio.

And I always thought I was a complete beginner because I didn't just take one photo. Sometimes, even in portrait sessions, when there seems to be hardly any difference between two photos, one of them suddenly feels real, authentic, and present just because of a small deviation, while the other is just another picture. Your video has encouraged me to stop feeling ashamed of not being able to take the perfect photo with a single click. Thank you!

I've watched thousands of videos on photography over the years and have been a keen photographer since the 1980's and I can honestly say this is one of, if not the best one I've ever seen! It's a complete game changer for me. I've always used burst mode, but in moderation-and now realise that I have been subconsciously holding back on using it more for fear (and guilt) of adopting a "spray and pray" approach. Your superb explanation of the legitimate use of the technique has completely changed my mindset. After 45 years of photography I wasn't expecting anything to really radically change my approach, but have to say that this video has changed my thinking. Forever!

My father was a professional freelance photographer for 30+ years, retiring when digital came on the scene. Until recently, I also believed that he had always taken just one shot to get his fantastic images. After his death, I found myself looking through thousands of contact sheets.... and he took a lot more than one shot for each fantastic one I remember! In hindsight, I now recognize that he also had motor drives on his film cameras to get as close to today's burst mode as he could... and that he carried multiple cameras around his neck when shooting action situations so he didn't need to pause to change film, he just picked up the other camera.!

I once read an article about National Geographic were they mentioned that for a spread in NatGeo that had between 8-12 images, the photographer typically shot between 20,000 - 60,000 images. This gave the editors multiple images of a situation to select from, to whittle that mountain of images down to the strongest 8 - 12 images for the piece.

So, as I was told it, "shoot a thousand shots, show one."

All of this also applies to cropping. Every photograph is a crop from reality. Don't listen to anyone who says you shouldn't crop more, later on, in computer

Awesome video. Seeing those old contact sheets was a true revelation.

While I rarely shoot "moving" subjects - my burst mode is my feet, trying many different angles, different crops, tight crops, wide crops, landscape/portrait, etc. And when I see them on the big screen - the shot typically turns out to be something completely different than what I though during shooting.

Live and walk within your own expectations. Make your own rules and feel free to change them as often as you like.

One of the best videos on photography that I have watched in a very long time! Loved it. Very pertinent and beautifully conveyed. Specially made effective by including the contact sheets of the past masters. Thank you.

This is very good.  Something else I've noticed is that many amateur photographers I know believe that the harder a shot is to get, the better it is. I have told them that the viewer doesn't care how hard it was to get the shot, they are only looking at the result. The only people who really care are the small minority of photographers looking at the image.

Excellent video-well done! Of course I liked and subscribed. My main avocation in life was as a maritime photographer. I chased ships for 30 plus years and some of my favorites are most likely beer cans and razor blades now. Back in the film days, I had developed what I called my "motor thumb." With my real job being an ambulance man and fire dispatcher, my paychecks would not allow for a fancy motor drive, so I learned to shoot with speed using my thumb to quickly fire off a series of images and hoped I was fast enough to get a good shot that captured the image in my head.

I finally bought a motor for my Nikon F3 and never looked back when weeks alter, I was standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, shooting the small rescue vessels, patrol cutters and a whole coterie of interesting tugboats escorting the carrier and really needed a camera to keep up with all the fast ever-changing action from my perch above it all. (I discovered what fashion photographers have known for a long time; sequences make or break the photo session.)

The ocean environment is harsh on cameras and eventually they were traded for DSLRs. I really like having the Continuous dial which allows for rapid shooting when you need a series of images. Although, being a retired desert rat now, I seldom shoot ships anymore. But I have taken a liking for shooting ambulances and medic units in action. This old man's arthritic thumb is more than happy to get with the new tech which makes creating just the right shot in ever-changing time sequences much easier.

"The experience behind the photo." Wonderful. Film or digital, it's always been about high energy and fierce calm concentration.

I think people forget that part of what makes a great photographer is the ability to select, to curate photos. The required skills don't end with setting the light, framing the picure etc

Ich bin sehr beeindruckt von den vielfältigen Nuancen eines Fotos. Mir wird immer mehr bewusst, dass Fotografen neben ihrem professionellen Blick auch dieses feine Gespür für Details benötigen.

WOW !! educates both pro's and amateurs in one video 😅

wow what an eye opener this video is! I now actually feel better than I am not failing in photography. Waiting on that "decisive moment" isn't realistic. For me it implied that he took a single shot at just the right time. Like he was always there at the right time! Like magic..Thank you very much for making this vid! SUBCRIBED

This needed to be said. Great video! I have felt this way from day one, and there is a lot of snobbery that revolves around photography technique. This was such a refreshing take. Thank you for making this very well thought out video :)
