November 1941, Sidi Rezegh. Tanks lie broken across the desert, and both armies are racing to drag them back into the fight. While German crews relied on powerful tracked Sd.Kfz. 9 half-tracks, the British brought something that looked far stranger: a plain, wheeled, diesel-powered Scammell Pioneer lorry with a winch, a jib and a whole recovery system behind it. In this documentary, we look at five differences that set the Pioneer apart, from its rocking-beam wheels and economical Gardner diesel engine to the trained crews and shared vehicle family that kept British tanks in service. It did not win the battle, but it shows how one army worked to keep its machines running.
