Frank if you read this please know I grew up in the neighborhood you patrolled and lived only blocks from where you were shot. My Sicilian family was devastated when the news broke. Finally, you alone were the reason I chose law enforcement as a career. I hope you are well and know that you remain admired and loved.
Let's take a moment and reflect on and honor the courage of NYPD Inspector Paul Delise for stepping up and backing Frank Serpico's allegations. Inspector Delise put his life on the line too.
I was in Emergency Services in my community for 20+ years. There was a uniform supply shop in town that had just opened, so I went to check it out. The owner said he had retired from the NYPD (this shop was a very long way from New York). I asked if he knew of Frank Serpico, one of my heroes. He mumbled something about "that dirty, lowlife, SOB..." I left, and never darkened the door of that place again. I will always admire Serpico, and men like him. The world needs them now more than ever. Thank you, Frank, wherever you are!
The machine is powerful and broken by design. Frank briefly and heroically oiled it for a time, but the machine will always survive. God bless Frank Serpico. We need more of him.
Happy 89th Birthday to legendary retired NYPD Det. Francesco "Frank" Serpico, NYPD Medal of Honor recipient and the first police officer in American history to expose widespread systemic corruption in a police department.
My Father was in law enforcement for years and one day he was out to lunch with his fellow officers and when they got their food at the counter the cashier who was about to take their money for their order saw their badges and said it's ok it's on the house and the officers said hey thanks and proceeded to their table yet my father would look at the cashier and say no, how much do I owe you. My Father KNEW what that badge represented and it was'nt for free food. Thanks for your honesty, Frank !
Frank's story shows that once a person has committed an act of corruption they will rarely be able to turn on those more corrupt than themselves as few are prepared to take the penalty for corruption. It is the permissive action of those in the middle who prevent the clean up of the institutions and punishment of the worst offenders.
When I was a struggling audio engineer living in a Nashville apartment at 17 years old in 1998 with nothing but an FM radio for entertainment. I bought a book from a yard sale that had black bindings and just the name Serpico in white on the side with gold lettering of the authors name. The plastic & paper cover insert was gone so I had no idea what the book was about but they had a tub full of books $1 each so I grabbed 5 books and the Serpico book just looked different so I got it. I thought it would be a sci-fi book or something like that, but I read it first and I could not put it down. I read it every chance I got until I finished it then read it again. I never read books a second time, but the story was amazing. I had no idea it was a real life story until I got to the end of it the first time. Then I was talking to a mastering engineer who was helping me get work and he had books everywhere in his studio. So I told him I had this book called Serpico about a good cop fighting against the system. He walked over and pulled out a newer 1990s reprint. He said I have it. I said "no mine doesn't look like that one." So the next time I went over to his studio I took it with me to show it too him. He said "this is a 1st edition". He didn't have any work for me that week so before I left he asked if I would sell the book. I said No, but you can have it for your collection since you are always finding me engineering gigs, I've read it 3 times. He would not let me give it too him, I kept telling him I didn't want any money for it I got it for $1 in a yard sale bin. Then he asked me to help him move some stuff around his studio and I said sure still not expecting anything in return. When we were done 10 minutes later he gave me a crisp $100 bill for the work and the book. I know the book is a first edition but it wasn't worth $5. He was a very wealthy man who really helped me learn and gain a client base but when he retired in 2015 I went to his retirement party and he gave me a Serpico DVD! I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS A MOVIE even after all those years later. So the Serpico story is really a part of my early days as an audio engineer and the sheer entertainment I got from that 1 book is amazing! So that's my Serpico story!
God Bless Frank Serpico... I experienced some corruption in my Hospital Security officer job...I loved the work. But there was a ring of corruption from the top to the bottom of Administration. I resigned, never got a pension. 🙏 Honesty is hard to find .
