Why did the IDF decide to slap Piers Morgan’s mug into its “Press Files” video, and why did Eylon Levy, Israel’s former PR man, respond to Morgan’s plea for foreign journalists in Gaza with a cheery remark about “crosshairs” and making sure he gets back out of Gaza alive? Not quite a formal death threat, but when your media strategy is to smear journalists and then joke about their survival odds, you’re not exactly sending out the welcome wagon. Meanwhile, Gaza is still locked up tighter than a Tory donor’s tax returns, with independent reporters kept firmly outside. I’m digging into the IDF’s latest allegations and the CPJ’s grim roll call of dead journalists that makes this kind of language impossible to brush off. Since when did asking for a bit of independent scrutiny become a crime against the state?
