ALL FOR DEMANDING POLICE REFORM | Senator Ruth Luque questioned Interior Minister César Astudillo for not promoting a profound police reform and told him he seemed afraid to do so. Her comment sparked the minister's anger during the debate on the legislative powers requested by Keiko Fujimori's government.

The discussion escalated violently when Iber Maraví intervened to defend his colleague and reprimand Astudillo for interrupting her. The senator described the minister's attitude as "completely discourteous," which provoked another verbal confrontation. According to Maraví, the Interior Minister reacted with disrespectful gestures and expressions, while Senator Francisco Calisto Giampietri also allegedly approached him in an intimidating manner, even attempting to hit him, and challenged him to continue the discussion outside the parliamentary chamber.

The altercation forced the temporary suspension of the Senate's Constitutional Committee session, where the Executive Branch was seeking to convince parliamentarians to expand the legislative powers that the Chamber of Deputies had limited to citizen security and prevention in the face of the El Niño phenomenon.

The confrontation occurred while measures to combat crime were being debated. However, Luque's questioning focused on the lack of a clear proposal for police reform, an issue that was overshadowed by the clash between legislators and representatives of the Executive Branch.

Despite this, Defense Minister Rafael Belaúnde described the altercation as "an incident typical of the fervor of political debate," even comparing it to a "street soccer game."

"If street soccer games get out of control, they can in politics too," he said.
