little disclaimer:

that logo i used to represent vis isn't exactly THE vis logo.
vis technically doesn't even have a logo, but there was a thread on a github issue which has what seems to be the most popular logo for it.
i couldn't get an SVG for the logo, so i had to make-do and create my own as close as possible to the original.

here's the issue: https://github.com/martanne/vis/issues/328

also helix is NOT allat bro i swear rust projects rot the brain

"abandon the mainstream tool for the obscure one" performs well as a video and rarely survives as a daily driver.

While I do agree with most points made here, especially the issue with the community itself, I think it's bad faith not to point out the fact that you don't need a single one of those issues to be present with your neovim experience to have a good code editor. My entire config is one 244 line file. That is everything from editor settings to keybinds to autocommands to plugins and their settings in one file. The backend might be bloated but the user doesn't see or feel that.

The manim animations make the video really fluid

This might get me to switch. From nano 😂

On the other hand, the fact that vim has all that legacy code simply means that I get to use it in almost every machine imaginable. And wherever vim is not available, vi is.
The backwards compatibility to me is a feature, not a bug.

Vis(ionary)

I'll try it, but honestly I'll just continue using regular vim

too many "hipster" (for the lack of a better word) versions of the same editor that try to do the exact same thing.

Finally, a `vis` video, I've been waiting for so long! Basically have been using it as `vi` with syntax highlighting.

Vis is good, but ive been resting with helix and never been happier.

Ending up with with a neovim distro instead of just having your own configuration is honestly a skill issue (which is fair).
And if vis was as popular as neovim, then you'd also have people making distros, and the same people who think they need them in neovim would reach for them in vis.

And while having dozens of plugins obviously has downsides, being that militant about having a small config is also not particularly sensible.

My neovim """"config"""" is 2.5K lines of code. But calling it a configuration is dumb / misleading. The part that sets (n)vim & emacs apart from other editors is that they're programmable as a first class feature. Using them means programming them. There is no configuration file. There is only code.

The vast majority of my "config" is scripts I wrote over time to automate stuff.
Some parts got large enough that I extracted them into separate plugins, but a bunch are just standalone scripts and if you don't have a bunch of scripts in your profile, then you're not really making use of what these editors offer.

Having said all that, I do agree that the neovim ecosystem is in a pretty sorry state. The project itself is going great IMO. You called it sloppified, but as you also saw yourself, it has a good chunk less code than vim by now, while being more stable and having more features.

The part that's just sad is the heap of garbage that is 90% of plugins out there. With that as a starting point I get why people hyper fixate on minimalism.

Tsoding reference

Zozin. Absolute cinema

certainly interesting but a project's codebase size  isn't a factor i take inti consideration when choosing software, and the bloat argument is mostly self afflicted, both vim and neovim can still be used bare and simple

tried it a few years ago, it's wayyy too limited for anything beyond simple text editing.

i really admire the clean design however, the project doesn't have to deal with the historical constraints on vim and neovim

Edit: it has a scripting API and builtin LSP support now ? fine, i will check it out again

I dabbled a little around in vis and I really like it. I love how easy it is to customize the colors and since I'm not a programmer but write notes within my unix-like system, this works really well for me. Thanks for showcasing it, you've got a new subscriber!
Also I like the style of your videos, your color scheme and the way you explain the topics you've chosen.

I do love nvim, but I have basically 7 plugins and lazy so Im not exactly ricing it.

That being said, vis does seem more refined from this introduction.

I think I like the regex changes, multicursor, and some of the other opinionated choices the creators have made!

All that said, Im not sure I can currently be convinced to leave the ecosystem - even with my tiny config. Like helix, vis just isnt mature enough (especially the community) for me to swap, but people like yourself will hopefully change that.

I may reconsider (and research some more) in the future, however. This seems like it could be a genuine joy to use, with a little more time and development.

Thanks for the video!

i love vis!!! so cool you talked about it. Plan 9 (acme and sam as the editors of course) have a special place in my heart!!

Cool editing, stands out from your previous videos in a good way

Wishing you good luck! Looks good.
