We had a chance to visit with Mark Morton, the American GRAMMY®-nominated musician and lead guitarist of the groove metal band Lamb of God. Mark is best known for his bold and potent, yet melodic lead guitar playing that incorporates elements of groove metal, thrash, and death metal. During his visit to the Gibson Garage in Nashville to celebrate the launch of his signature Les Paul™, we talked tone, his choice of the Badlander® 100 for his rig, how he got started with MESA/Boogie®, and more. Check out the interview and catch Mark playing his Les Paul through the Badlander 100 when the Lamb of God “Into Oblivion” tour hits a venue near you.
“The Badlander has these wonderful, very present mids, and the low-end response is so usable and so not saggy, and it doesn’t fall apart on the bottom end. And for Lamb of God, which is really heavy riffing, that’s really important. The Badlander, which was really the first thing that grabbed me, was these low ends. I can really now push some low into it and still have it have a gain structure and a gain response that is usable for me, and that’s helping me achieve what I’m playing rather than something I’m trying to wrestle around.” — Mark Morton.
Mark Morton has been part of the MESA/Boogie family for decades. In this conversation, he breaks down the evolution of his iconic guitar tone and how he has moved from a Mark IV to the Badlander 100 paired with a Rectifier 4x12 cabinet as a key part of his modern rig. Known for its tight low end and articulate gain response, the Badlander gives Mark the control and clarity needed for Lamb of God’s fast, heavy riffing style and, as he puts it, gets him the “Watermelon Thump” sound.
He also shares how he feels about modeling amps vs real tube amps, how the tubes in an amp directly affect his tone, and reflects on his signature Les Paul, his long-standing relationship with the team at MESA/Boogie, and gives away some secrets on how he dials in that iconic Lamb Of God guitar tone.
