SWR presenter Johannes Zenglein traveled to Lake Constance in his rented campervan and calculated the expenses for a four-day vacation. He explains how the rental price for a campervan is calculated and gives tips on what to look out for when renting one. Not every vehicle is equally suitable for everyone. He also learns how expensive 5-star campsites differ from the cheaper ones.
Campsites on Lake Constance with star-rated comfort - and without
Lake Constance is a popular vacation destination. Johannes Zenglein tests a large 5-star campsite near Lindau, a smaller, family-run site in a nature reserve in Bodmann-Ludwigshafen, a public motorhome parking area in Friedrichshafen, and free parking on a farm in Airach. The ostrich farm belongs to the "LandvergnĂŒgen" association, which has 800 farms in Germany where motorhomes can stay for free.
Rent or buy a motorhome?
The purchase price is even higher than the rental costs. For example, if you're talking about a new motorhome worth around âŹ85,000, it looks like this: Renting a motorhome would cost âŹ132 per day. For âŹ85,000, you could rent it for almost 650 days.
So, if you only want to travel by motorhome once a year, you should rent one rather than buy one.
