As a kid I was in the barber shop (one of two in town) some guy walked in with a bunch of these radios selling them for $10 apiece. This being the larger shop in town (3 chairs), he lucked out and sold one to one of the barbers.
I got one very similar as a kid in the early 70s You could hear police on the fm broadcast band then but only control not the mobiles This radio ment i didnt have to touch the sanyo music centre that was my dads domain and i could listen to planes too while lying in bed...happy memories
That looks like a handmade circuit board!! These were common, and they either came in sometime around 1969 (or they went out, giving way to modern, printed circuit boards). That is a FANTASTIC radio, on the inside!! That's also a nice job on the dial cord!! Again, your friend, Jeff!!
I remember seeing lots of this style of radio (vertical layout of dial on the top and speaker on the bottom) at many car boot sales in the 1980s with unheard of brand names such as Kingsonic, Trusonic etc. All with their battery/mains capability.
I like the cheap and cheerful aesthetic. Colourful icons. Frequencies above 108MHz shown as 3 bands, so you 'get more'!
A schoolfriend had one branded 'Bambino'. It offered plenty volume with plenty distortion; tricky to set at reasonable volume.
Despite their shortcomings, these sets did at least have PSUs which didn't generate loads of hash. Also, I prefer the old-style smooth, continuous tuning - not the jumpy modern type.
For the best nostalgia, use a restored set with reproduction 'Flying Bomb' batteries!😊
I remember someone having one of these radios with a battery charger built in. They recharged some normal batteries, all of a sudden, BANG batteries exploded, I remember seeing the radio lift of the bench.
I HAD THAT EXACT SAME RADIO! AS A QUIRK, IT USED TO PICK UP ITV TV SOUND FROM SUTTON COLDFIELD - I LOVED IT AND DID INDEED CHANGE THE SPEAKER FOR A BETTER ONE
I am sure that I still have one of those, I think that I bought it when I was around 14 with my pocket money, I'm well into my 70s now so I'll see if I can dig it out.
I remember having a radio like this in the1970s. The volume control over time developed the same crackling problem and the sound quality was pretty bad from the beginning. I didn't pick up much beyond the strongest stations so it definitely wasn't a DX radio. NOAA Weather radio was nice to have though. I don't remember what the radio was called, but I saw others like it as well in different colors. Seeing it brings back some memories.
These were sold everywhere in the 70s, even my local sweet shop had them. I came by the AM only version of this a while ago, after re-capping it worked very well but sounded tinny of course. Then I found speakers in a dead DAB radio fitted and I put one in. I was amazed how good it sounded after, clear and bassy, which I never expected with that tiny output transformer. Now I find myself using it out of preference. I run it off ni-cads and can use it all day for several days. Would be interesting to see if you can find a speaker for yours.
