The 4449 shell is currently being restored to look like what it was in this movie. The actual locomotive was never buried

This was filmed up on the Chiriaco Summit area off Interstate 10 near the Coachella Valley. Red Cloud Mine Road.
It was on the Kaiser Railroad line that ran between their open pit iron mine down to the main line of the Southern Pacific at the Salton Sea.
The mine shut down about 20 years ago and they tore the tracks out totally about 5 years ago.
My son and I built railbikes and got to ride on them before they got rid of it.

Average TTTE crash scene be like:

"They weren't gonna use it anymore anyway."
That line certainly didn't age well.

Another excellent movie with two great legends.

My family "chased" the Daylight through Arizona in the 1980's. It was fun to see it under steam.

Alright, that absurdity and cinematic stunt of that train crash warrants a must watch of this movie.

Rhis was/is a great movie. I remember watching it at theaters when it was released. I'm currently working on a GS-4 in HO scale adding a sound decoder and other maintenance to keep her running. Thank you for posting this. 👍

Saw the 4449 operating on the Coast Line while still under SP ownership in early 1955 and again in 1958. Can't believe they gave away "our" GS locomotive to rust in a park in Oregon for many years. Belle monstre.
