The Speculative Evolution of the Loch Ness Monster

Ben G Thomas

388,585 views

The Loch Ness Monster is one of the most enduring mysteries in the field of cryptozoology. One of the most widely known attempts to explain the aquatic enigma is the suggestion that the Nessie is a living plesiosaur. That's a rather unlikely explanation - but let's speculative about the evolution of such a creature, anyway!

I love how, "It's just eels", sounds similar to the phrase, "It's just owls", used to describe most cryptids

The idea of it being a ginormous Tully Monster is probably the most batshit explanation I've heard so far, and thus my new favourite hypothesis.

@tobiasginsburg9992 9 months ago

Please do a shirt with “the plesiosaur of possibilities” on the front and “the eels of truth” on the back

@DrPhillyCheeseSteak 9 months ago

The Loch Ness Monster is really just three eels in a trench coat.

@jimlatosful 9 months ago

"It's just eels" can be Ben's version of Trey's owls and basking sharks

@leppeppel 9 months ago

The Eels of Truth would be a good band name.

The Greenland shark theory by Jeremy Wade is my favourite cause the episode where it came up was hilarious. Like throughout the first half of the episode, he's fishing the loch and finding nothing and you can pretty much tell the point where they determined "Okay, this is boring, there's absolutely nothing in here but eels" and pivoted to "But what about this whacky thing in Iceland?! Giant worm? More like ancient shark! And I dunno... maybe that shark swam into the loch sometimes? They're... kinda close to each other."
It really feels like the Greenland shark episode was supposed to be its own episode, but Loch Ness turned out such a nothingburger wet fart that they put the two together so we'd still get to see Jeremy catch some sort of big, freaky fish.

I think Peter Scott was being a bit cheeky with the name Nessiteras rhombopteryx, it's an anagram of "monster hoax by Sir Peter S"

Honestly, given how crazy Island Dwarfism can get, and the fact Lakes are basically inverted Islands, it's totally reasonable that if we assumed Nessie was a plesiosaur, it could be a dwarf plesiosaur, that has remained small enough to support a larger population as to not be functionally extinct.

The Loch Ness Monster is ACTUALLY just a small Spinosaurus that decided to turn into a Plesiosaur because it was bored

@Goji_EmperorOfTheOmniverse 9 months ago

„Its probably just eels” HAS to be a shirt too

Perfect pre-sleep video drop

This is why we subscribe to Thought Potato's take on Nessie.

Also speaking of lake monsters: my old science teacher claimed to have witnessed Champ (Lake Champlain’s own Nessie) and he claims it most resembled Tanystropheus.
