I convinced my D&D group to try Daggerheart and we've had two incredible sessions so far. Love this game.

Daggerheart and Taskmaster. The crossover I didn't know I needed.

I have found that not every single success with fear needs to have a direct "consequence". Sometimes there is nothing that fits, and just taking a fear to spend down the road (that might be narrated as a consequence from the earlier roll) is enough. But sometimes you can even ask players "what would be a consequence of your roll? You succeeded, but at what cost?"

But yeah, handing out a stress is a nice thing to fall back on.

The golden rule has been the golden rule for decades in a lot of different games. It's really the most important thing in any rulebook. We don't really need it, but it's amazing to see in every book.

"What does Ryadin feel about this"

I ask it way too rarely. Letting players speak about the inner life of their characters nearly always improves the scene, and gives other people something to build off of.

Your daggerheart advice has been so spot on, really brings a lot to my table, thanks!

I like asking players to mark a stress when the character would be stressed like if a character spots their ex whom they had a nasty break-up in the area. No roll. They just mark it.

I'd suggest that "Let's golden rule it" would probably be closer to "Let's house rule it" than rule of cool

Just did the quick start campaign with my GF. I had her control 2 PCs and it worked perfectly!

One phrase I have realised I started using when running games of Daggerheart or Dungeons and Dragons is, "You've probably never seen a [Insert unusual visual. Like a Clank falling in love and their "heart beating" It's actually just their mechanics whirring harder and faster or something] but you imagine this is what it looks like this" and I find it's just a fun little phrase which either brings forth a laugh or makes more serious moments appear more sinister or tense.

E.g. You've never seen a Faun's legs extend in length to this extent, or their horns become more grizzled and gnarled as they twist into tighter bulkier knots and their posture cracks with the sound of breaking bones. But you imagine this might not be an ordinary Faun anymore.

The Bruce Lee mentality is in affect here. As a GM, inform yourself of the different systems and their GM's, implement the parts of that knowledge that feels right for you. Give it a try amongst your players and see if it works for the benefit of the whole. If not? disregard and continue to move onto the next idea, until you have perfected your understanding of being a GM. Only then will you have the acceptance that your just flowing "by the seat of your pants" with your PC's at the table but now you have the ability to do so. Hell yeah.. welcome to being a true GM and enjoy it to the fullest. Thank you for the shared different POV's.

Philling the table with content. Love the amount of content but be careful not to burn yourself out :)

My version of "What does the card say?" is usually, "Ok, read it aloud," or even, "Remind me?"
Likewise, if I have something the character can do in front of me, I'll tend to read the whole thing aloud, just so we all start to remember.
I also like to positively reinforce the ability, with an editorial "Ok, that's pretty cool," or "Yikes, that's powerful," or suchlike - which is generally easy in DH, as the abilities are, in fact, pretty cool!

And, to add my $.02 about "Golden Rule It", the custom card creator is a beautiful resource for this at character creation or leveling up. Do you want your Sorcerer to be able to switch elements on the fly rather than be stuck with a single choice? New card time! Do you want to create a Realm involving the fact that your character is a noble and wields genuine, practical military and social power? Cards! Homebrewing a Gunslinger? Cards!

Instead of "let's golden rule it."
When I want to deviate from the rules I usually say, "But fuck it."
Often followed by crying out, "BUTT-FUCK IT!"
After doing this a few times, some of my players started joining in with the second part.

“Reading the card, explains the card”

2:22 I've seen this point come up before that players will not want to make an action roll because it will generate fear (or mark stress, etc). It seems wild to me because if you don't act, then you are handing the GM a Golden Opportunity to make as hard of a move as they want. It seems like the players are trading a chance at consequence for a guaranteed consequence.

Trying to dodge Fear by not rolling also seems against the spirit of Daggerheart, which to me feels something like: I know the world threatens me, but I have the courage to act anyway. It's a powerful message, and I want to see people (including myself) embrace it more.

These are fantastic. Thanks. A lot to consider.

Theres new void content up right now for new adversaries and environments! As of now they haven't publicly announced it yet!

@duncanmacneil4759 1 year ago

what does it look like.... is the one I used previously. It make people describe their attacks or actions to help get them to think.
Using the Fear causes this is a good reminder of the reactions.

I think a good one is NOW the FEAR is at X...
To help build tension of what is to come.
