On 26 January 1808, four hundred soldiers of the New South Wales Corps marched on Government House in Sydney and arrested Governor William Bligh. This was the Rum Rebellion - the only successful military coup in Australian history.

But this wasn't a revolution against the Crown. The officers insisted they were loyal British subjects removing a tyrant. So what drove these men to such desperate action?

The New South Wales Corps, nicknamed the "Rum Corps," dominated the colonial economy through their control of the rum trade. With virtually no currency in the colony, rum became the de facto money, and the officers who controlled it grew extraordinarily wealthy through monopolistic practices.

John Macarthur, a former Corps officer turned wool entrepreneur, clashed repeatedly with successive governors. When Governor William Bligh arrived in 1806 with orders to break the Corps' stranglehold on trade, conflict was inevitable. Bligh's aggressive reforms threatened the officers' wealth and power, particularly Macarthur's contested land grant at the Cowpastures.

The crisis erupted when Bligh threatened Corps officers with treason charges. Major George Johnston, the local commander, made a fateful decision. On the evening of 26 January 1808, he led 400 soldiers through Sydney to Government House. The band played "The British Grenadiers" as they marched to arrest the King's appointed governor.

The rebellion was bloodless but unmistakable - armed soldiers had overthrown royal authority. Johnston and Macarthur governed for two years until Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived in 1810 with the battle-hardened 73rd Regiment of Foot, fresh from victories in India.

Johnston faced court-martial in London and was convicted of mutiny. Bligh was vindicated but never returned to colonial service. Macarthur avoided prosecution and built the wool empire that transformed Australia.

This is the story of the Rum Rebellion - Australia's only coup d'état.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is  the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham and am a member of the Royal Historical Society.
I am also a member of the Victorian Military Society, the Anglo Zulu War Society and the Military Historical Society.
