But at some point, convenience started creating more work.

Now every simple task seems to require another account, another app, another verification code, another subscription or another demand on our attention.

And Gen X is getting tired of playing along.

We’re not afraid of technology.

We just may be reaching the point where we’re willing to keep what genuinely makes life better—and start saying no to the rest.

I long for the 70’s and 80’s when life was wonderful. I miss my family who have passed away. I miss going to see great movies. I miss the mall. I miss record stores. I miss real rock & roll. I miss the freedom. I miss being able to go somewhere and be alone. If I could time travel back to those days and stay there I would.

You’re absolutely right. The irony is incredible: technology was supposed to save us time and effort. Instead, we are increasingly being asked to become the unpaid employees, IT technicians, and customer-service representatives of the companies we are paying.

I hate that my jobs require a smart phone...my own!😡 It's expected or else you don't get hired. Then they expect to be able to contact you any time.
I don't answer or reply on weekends, days off, vacations. My phone, my time.

This is how I feel, too. I make it a point to remove apps, accounts, and subscription services wherever I can in an effort to de-digitize my life.

I love it when you sign up with one company, (newsletter, coupon, etc) then you get 20 different similar companies emailing you 2x each a day. Then you go to unsubscribe and it takes you to their website asking you more questions. I mark ANYthing I don't know as SPAM. Also sick of surveys, feedback. Done.

I freaking hate that. You can't even LOOK AT A THING without signing up for it first.

I hate appliances that beep at me & don't let me decide if I want to use this feature. I don't need a washing machine/dryer/dishwasher/car that keeps beeping at me to tell me the loads finished, fuels low, driving to fast or too slow etc. I have a brain and know how to use it but companies treat us like we are all mindless.

Gex X isn’t the only generation getting weary of modern life. Generation Jones is right there with you. I feel more and more every day that the Luddites weren’t crazy after all. One of my biggest frustrations is setting up new devices. You used to buy something, take it home, plug it in and turn it on. Now i spend half an hour or more just trying to get it connected to the WiFi, other devices or the printer. And then there’s always the glitches that require clearing caches, rebooting or waiting for 15 minute updates. And because there’s so many devices, there’s always at least one that gets a glitch; it’s like having a rundown car that requires tinkering every day. Often, having i eventually figure out how to get my new device set up or an older device working again, I’m too exhausted to even use it.
