Why do some paintings appear deep and vibrant, while others seem flatter, even when the colors and values are correct?
One of the secrets lies in managing edges.
In this outdoor demonstration, I create an alla prima landscape with a limited palette and show you how to use sharp, blurred, and faded edges to create depth, suggest distance, and, most importantly, guide the eye to the focal point.
As you paint, you'll see how I build the landscape step by step, then how I use the brush, the palette knife, and even my finger to make certain outlines appear or disappear.
The goal isn't to include every detail; it's to choose what should draw the eye... and what can blend into the painting.
