I urge everybody watching this to buy and read the novel. It is compelling and terrifying and twice as violent and one of the best books I've ever read.
This movie appealed to my son years ago. My boy is 37 now and I realized that the fact that a black and white film was praised by such a young person and it transcended the modern movie tastes amazed me. In my opinion today, the public is a much more sophisticated viewer than ever, in spite of all the garbage produced in the past few years. In a nutshell, this is a great film.
it's ironic that The Petrified Forest (1936) was Bogart's breakout role considering I thought his acting was quite stilted in that film, his talent really shined in the middle and end of his career.
With Robert Blake gone, I believe there is no known cast member left. However, there are a few cast members who may have survived till today -- the Indian kid that Howard saves would be as young as 80, no older than 85. The shopkeeper's assistant perhaps 90. And the girl/young woman who lights Howard's cigarette as he lies in the hammock might be mid to late 90s. Perhaps they are celebrities in some small town. But I can find no evidence online. Many people are surprised to discover that the guy who was in Barretta and In Cold Blood was in Treasure; interestingly, Perry (Blake's character) mentions the movie/book because the two murderers discuss finding treasure. I am not sure if the real Perry actually discussed the book and this affected casting Blake. But I would bet there is no other movie where a character mentions a movie that the actor playing him was in as child.
The greedy "You'll get me in the back" scene was parodied to perfection in an episode of The Simpsons when Bart went 3 ways in, with 2 friends, on an expensive comic book. Watch the 2 in succession, if you can, and you'll have a laugh attack.
