I wish I knew what you were talking about, I just ordered a Sudoku for big dummies!

At the “sticking point” I turned to the Phistomefel ring. I thought I solved it by seeing that there was either one or zero digit 2’s in the sets. I went with one, which eliminated a 2 from R5C8. But that is just a bifurcation. I don’t consider it a logical solve.
I usually tell people that Sudoku is not a mathematical puzzle. That is to say, the digits 1 to 9 are just symbols – they could as well be letters, colors, or signs of the Zodiac. But using the even/odd dichotomy adds another layer of meaning to the symbols which makes this puzzle so profound. Well done, Sulphur! I am massively impressed. And thanks, Timberlake for presenting it!

I would like to add another very helpful tip for ALL puzzles regardless of easy or hard, based on your opening 2 minutes. Look at every empty square as another 3x3 grid of nine, and put the numbers in their respective places. For example, the 1's go in the top left corner, 3's go in top right corner, 5's go in dead centre, and so forth for all the numbers. That's not what's happening when you put the locations of the numbers in the square, as they all go by default into the top left corner, and not their actual position within the 3x3 grid.

This often will result in only two number options per square that "block out" any other options, and further isolates the remaining options for the remaining numbers. With using a pen or pencil on a paper puzzle, I use "tick marks" in the respective positions, and every "double option" I use a faint line to "join the ticks" so that I know they are "blocked" for any other numbers, and thus gives me easily seen combinations that rapidly clean up the puzzle once past the "middle" phase of the whole puzzle that unlocks the remaining solutions.

If an empty square has more than two options, then I don't join any two to "block" the rest of the options. It must be narrowed down to only two options for that to work.

I'll watch the rest of the video for any new tricks, but that is a very helpful tip that should be on your puzzle samples.

@1:35 - w/ the 3s - I saw that the way those 3s interact w/ Col 7 you can mark 3's in Col 7, Block 6
  not that it really helped me, other than some more restriction in that block.

@2:45 - when you were doing the 7s, if you caught the "double scan" you could have done them as 79s in Block 2
  I didn't either.  in fact, I think I missed marking the 7s AND the 9s in block 2, but then ended up getting them when I was looking at heavy houses and intersections and got the pair of 35s in Row 3 . . .
  which was the long way around the barn.  but, still did not get me anywhere.

@6:57 - well, here is where my 3s in Block 6 "might help ?
       because there is another cell we can mark as "even only"  in R6C8

@10:37 - we actually have 4 odd digits (not 3) the given 179 and the R3C5 which is 35
              it is R3C5 that keeps R4C5, R6C5 from both being odd

just to be clear, even working on my own AND then getting help from the video, I  STILL broke the puzzle

Interesting.  It definitely is a trick because you are testing one of two potential scenarios. The purists don't usually like that, but I have no problem adding it to my bag of tricks.

Thank you so much Timberlake for this very new perspective for solving very extreme Sudoku. I am use to solving extreme Sudoku but it takes me often a very long time and at level 13 (highest rate that I have found until now) I am always stuck so I hope that with this new way of solving I shall have less difficulty now. but the numbers themselves are completely arbitrary. 12345 vs. 6789 is just as valid a 13579 vs. 2468. I of course see how this works since it was explained well, but it seems far from a general method - just something that happens to work for this puzzle. Maybe because of the 179 and 357 in column and row 5 respectively, and the rest is "luck." Right?

I can we get the sudoku software you are using?

I really do not understand the ‘strategy’ of randomly looking where certain candidates might go. Much better to spend 15 minutes populating every possible candidate in every cell (after first putting the obvious ’giveaways’ in place) then scanning for pointing pairs / box-line eliminations and rechecking to check if eliminations have not opened up new PPs etc. look for any naked or hidden pairs or triples and this usually ends the so-called tough or super-fiendish puzzles. Might need an xy wing scan but usually that’s it. If you are really unlucky a W-wing might be needed but imho the need for the other ‘advanced’ techniques likely means we screwed up with our candidate placements.
