The spine is more than just a skeletal structure supporting the body; it also houses our spinal nerves, connecting upwards to the brain and forwards to our internal organs.
From the healing perspective of Yin Yoga and meridians, the spine is a channel for energy flow. The Governing Vessel (Du Mai) ascends along the spine, while the Bladder Meridian runs along both sides. When we spend long periods looking down, sitting, or hunching over, the spine's naturally healthy S-shaped curvature gradually straightens, stiffens, and in some cases, even reverses. This is like a water pipe being compressed or bent, blocking the flow of Qi and blood, preventing Yang energy from circulating throughout the body. This is why you might feel extremely tired, emotionally sluggish, or tense even when you haven't done anything.
In Yin Yoga healing practices, we use time, breath, and awareness to reopen the spine and allow energy to flow again through spinal exercises. Therefore, after spinal exercises, you often feel a sense of relaxation throughout your body.
Today's practice will focus entirely on the spine. Let's begin!
