We had a great time doing this tutorial. It was a blast to try something brand new we had never done before at the DRPA and since we had sooooo many requests for it, we figure it was high time we tried to paint one of their kits. We hope you enjoy it.

The RX-78's new pilot must've been truly skilled to have their shield survive intact long enough for it to become that scuffed. Amuro was always getting his sliced up. The real surprise is that White Base never seemed to run out of spare shields -- but it's no wonder later models would run with energy shields instead of physical ones.

For those interested, there will be actual Gundam MINIS or models as you like, it's a tabletop game called Gundam Assemble, and it's going to be revealed in less than a month in early March. It will be some kind of Battletech, 3 vs. 3 or 5 vs. 5 I think, but the point is that they are going to sell many robots in that mini format, in sprues just like WH, and you have to paint them yourself. So if you are a fan of painting minis and Gundam, this is great news.

The GOAT of mini painting meets the GOAT of model kits. What a time to be alive.

Duncan, absolutely loved the video!  Your mastery of painting got you a fantastic result despite your inexperience with gunpla!

Some notes I can give as a gunpla painter (some of which were said elsewhere):
- Masking off joints isn’t usually necessary and can be sometimes detrimental.  Bandai’s plastic can wear down pretty quick and kits can get floppy.  Sometimes that extra layer of paint gives just enough friction to keep it sturdy.  You’d just want to sand some joints down if parts are likely to rub in ways that would scrape paint off.  
-Most gunpla, especially Entry Grades, are RIDICULOUSLY color separated.  As such you’re probably better off painting parts before assembling.  You’d want to definitely mask off pegs that fit parts together to ensure they fit well, but you can generally save the time spent masking unless it’s a kit with a color correcting sticker over a section (you’ll see this in High Grades.)
-The dirty little secret of gunpla building is those rounded tabs on the ends of the v-fin on the head are meant to be cut off.  The v-fin is supposed to be sharp and pointy, and those are safety nubs so kids don’t get hurt.  There’s nothing in the instructions that tell you to do that though, so it always ends up catching experienced painters like yourself who will paint and detail up a gorgeous model and have no idea they left it on!

I absolutely LOVED watching someone with paint experience tackle a gunpla without the previous knowledge of how they are typically painted.  It really goes to show again and again, there’s no WRONG way to paint a model, and creativity is always inspiring!

This is an excellent video and is probably the “must watch” guide for hand painting Gunpla.

it is so cool getting to see duncan do his own thing, and just enjoy his hobby.  i would love to see duncan do more videos with enamels and the reductive technique.  maybe even use those grimdark gritty enamels.

This was cool Duncan.  I just recommend you remove the safety flags off of the "V fin" which is the head antenna.  It helps make the model look less like a toy.  I know, I know, it's arguably still going to look like a toy just every little bit helps.

I started my painting hobby back in 2012 during the time dark vengeance for 40k came out. Been on and off the hobby only returning during 2021 painted a gerbera tetra HG with your lessons burned into my brain. Watching you paint gunpla now feels like having a shared journey.
