81 years have passed since the end of the war. News23 anchor Ayaka Ogawa conducted an exclusive interview with journalist Soichiro Tahara, now 92 years old.

"Why did we plunge into a war we couldn't possibly win?"

When the Pacific War began, Mr. Tahara was a first-grader. On the day the war ended, at the age of 11, he witnessed the complete 180-degree change in attitude of the adults around him.

"I couldn't trust the government, the teachers, or the media."

He passionately discusses the reasons why he continues to work as a journalist even now at 92, and the "autonomy" needed in modern Japan.
