It is also derived from the legend of Kalmashapada, originally King Saudasa, who—under the influence of a demon—offered human flesh to a sage and was cursed to become a flesh-eating being himself.
His story appears in the great epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as in the Puranas.
The name Kalmashapada means “one with the spotted (kalmāṣa) feet (pāda)” — symbolizing moral stain and corruption.
