Sleep Token - Dark Signs
Continuing my journey through Sleep Token’s Sundowning and once again I was completely caught off guard.
The emotion in this song hit me almost immediately. From the very first lyric, I felt like Vessel was showing us another side of this relationship with Sleep, and this one really felt like the dependency side of it.
The way I interpreted it was that Vessel could see from the very beginning that Sleep wasn’t necessarily going to be good for him. He could see the pain, the hurt and all the baggage she was carrying, but he still chose to get involved because he felt like he needed her too. He needed something to ease his own pain and make him feel better, even if he knew there could be consequences to becoming attached to someone who was struggling themselves.
That really got to me because I could relate to the feeling behind it. Sometimes you can recognize that something probably isn’t good for you and still convince yourself that you need it because your mind is telling you that it’s the only thing that can make you feel okay.
I also couldn’t help but see some parallels to the way Borderline Personality Disorder can affect relationships and dependency, which made this one hit even harder for me personally.
This was another BEAUTIFUL track and I’m really loving the way these songs are continuing to build on each other.
What did you take from Dark Signs? I’m really curious to hear how everyone else interpreted this one.

The dependency angle I took from this song hit a little too close to home, especially the idea of knowing something probably isn’t good for you but still feeling like you NEED it because your brain is telling you that it’s the thing that’s going to make you feel okay.
I’m really curious how you guys interpreted Dark Signs though. Do you see Sleep the same way I did here, or did you take the song in a completely different direction?
And if you’ve been following my Sundowning journey, do you feel like these songs are starting to connect with each other yet? Because I’m definitely starting to notice some things 👀
