By the way Chang's wife's dying words were, "In war there are no winners, only widows and orphans."

"There's nothing in the world more beautiful than a baby's laughter.  Unless it's 3AM, you're home alone, and you don't have a baby."

I'm so glad it all came together for you by the end.  Everyone experiences things in their own way and I hate when viewers can't understand why it takes some people more time or if they miss something altogether.  It's like when someone looks at a puzzle.  If they see the solution right away, it's easy.  Being a reactor is harder than people think, trying to follow every little thing and make commentary under the pressure of knowing you're being observed.  I think you're very on point in many of your reactions and offer much more than "Oh that's so cool" like so many of them do.  Keep it up and thanks for sharing with us.

I love this movie.  It made some waves when it was released, but I felt it deserved more.  Great reaction.  Thank you.

The language is the weapon, once you learn the language you can start to "think" in their language.  Which opens up the ability to perceive time the way they do, non-linearly.

They come to Earth to teach Amy Adams the language because they know she will learn it and then teach it to humanity.  And presumably, humanity needs to understand the language in order to save the heptapods in 3000 years.

What'll really bake your noodle is knowing that Abbott was late to that final session because it knew that was the day it would die. But it came anyway, knowing it had to.

I can't say "same vibe", but Memento plays with time, memory, and perspective in a similar way.

6:51 Imagine that you are an interperter and you are translating for 2 people who can't communicate directly to each other. And one person is talking about how their people are lacking food, and says that "I desire more cows" because he wants to trade, but the word is the same as "war" you as an interperter need to make sure what is the intention behind the word, because when you relay the translation to the other person you want to make sure that what is being declared is an intent to "trade" or to "attack" in order to have more cows. That is why this profession is called interperter and not a translator, because you have to be aware of language and cultural nuances, so you don't unintentionally provoque a misunderstanding and start a conflict. This was the point Louise was trying to make.

My new favorite word is Kangaroo. Thank you for this. Like "Rosebud" it resides within me, in particular recognition.

The philosophical aspects of this movie had my brain in a blender. Louise didn't just know about the disease. She knew her daughter's entire life before she was even conceived, so from her perspective, choosing not to have her because of the disease would feel the same as if she did have her. Hannah's memory would still be there. So it isn't really a question of, "Would you have a child if you knew they were going to die young of a disease?" as much as it is asking a parent who had a child die young of a disease if they would like to go back and unmake all the life their child had in their lived experience.

I love how so many reactors include the "non-zero-sum-game" moment, without realizing its significance in the movie. It's the first real, real hint that there's time shenanigans happening.

7:19 it is interesting that after this scene, they don't butt heads. Ian defers to her expertise for all communication strategies after that point and follows her example, while contributing with his own expertise in a supportive role. It is the others who she has to battle with. Seeing the chopper interaction for the first time I did not expect that it would go this way.

A fantastic example of multilingual dreaming: my partner was born in Belarus, moved to Israel at 10, and then to Australia in her 30s. Added to that she's a history professor with a major in Latin. While she cant remember any Russian, she is fluent in Hebrew and English, and can effortlessly translate Latin text.
And she often talks in her sleep. Full conversation with tonal inflection, as though having a conversation. Usually its in English or Hebrew, but twice I've heard something Slavic. And once in a while it's something in Latin. But because its a dead language, theres no tonal inflection. It comes out in a flat monotone. Which at 3am in a pitch black room is scary af!

I remember watching a reaction to this movie in late 2022 or early 2023.  When I started watching it, I thought it was for a different movie called "The Arrival", but by the time I realized my error, I was hooked and watched the entire reaction video, which I normally wouldn't have done because I hadn't seen the movie myself.  Shortly after watching that reaction, I had a stroke.  The stroke scrambled some of my memories, and during my recovery, I mistakenly thought I had seen "Arrival" and started watching other reaction videos to it. However, while watching them, I couldn't figure out why some reactors would show scenes I couldn't remember seeing before.  It wasn't until about a year and a half into my recovery that my memories started coming back, and I realized I hadn't seen the movie.  I then watched the entire film, and I must say it's one of the most thought-provoking movies I've seen.

This was the movie that made me a super-fan of Villeneuve. Off topic, but nature was definitely showing off when Amy Adams' nose was created.

32:50 Ian read it out of Louise's book at the start of the movie: "Language is the first weapon drawn in a conflict"

As a single dad of a daughter about Hannah’s age this movie absolutely destroys me every single time I watch it! But i love it!  Youll LOVE  watching it again. Youll pick up on a lot more , this takes a few watches to catch it all but it’s amazing.

This film haunted me for a long time after watching it. It's a great script and Denis Villeneuve executed it brilliantly. It's definitely worth re-watching.

Every parent knows before they have a child that they are going to die one day. She just knows that it will be a shorter while, but as she loves her future daughter she could never even consider the scenario of not having her.

This is what's called a "bootstrap time travel" paradox. She can't call the general until he gives her his private number, but she can only learn of his private number when they meet at the peace summit..... which can't take place unless she calls him to call off the attack. Because Luis sees time as all happening at once, she can both learn the information from the future, and use the information in the past. Great reaction, hope you do more Sci-Fi. If you want more fun time-travel wobbly movies check out "Looper," and "Primer."

Sapir-Worf hypothesis being that language affects thinking; Louise learning the Heptapod language removed her linear thinking and gave her access to the future. this movie gets me every freaking time. in fact, rewatching it is kinda like learning the Heptapod language...
