9 Things Longtime Dog Owners Never Waste Money On — That New Owners Buy Every Month

Most of what you read on a bag of dog food is optional. AAFCO sorts every word on a pet food label into required, prohibited and optional, and the required list is short: product name, net weight, four guarantees, the ingredient list, the nutritional adequacy statement, feeding directions, and who is responsible. Everything else, premium, holistic, senior, breed formula, is optional, meaning nobody had to prove it before it went to print. The one sentence somebody did have to substantiate sits in small type near the feeding directions, and on most shelves it reads the same on the 60 dollar bag as on the 25 dollar bag.

In this video I read the AAFCO labeling rules, check what FDA says a health claim turns a product into, and run the dental aisle against the Veterinary Oral Health Council's accepted list. Nine things bought every month where the paperwork does not support the price, three that hold up, and one 15 second label check.
